France invokes "safeguard" ban on GM maize by ProQuest


The French government confirmed that it would activate a "safeguard clause" in European law that would allow it to ban commercial use of genetically modified (GM) maize in that country, Reuters reported. Some proposed changes being considered would require farmers growing GM crops to: * take precautions to avoid dissemination of GM seeds in the environment * take out insurance to cover losses incurred because of traces of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in other farmers' fields.
