In some situations, operational and financial benefits can be gained from the use of acoustics instead of umbilicals for the control and monitoring of subsea oil and gas equipment, but a balance has to be struck between overoptimistic predictions of performance and underestimation of those benefits because of a lack of familiarity with the subject. While this limitation can be mitigated by battery technology choice and by deploying multiple battery units, the fundamental consideration is to always use as low an output power as possible.\n The reality, however, is that trends, exceptions, out-of-range values, rapid changes and other configurable alerts and data transfers mean that real operational benefit is achievable, as well as significant financial savings (over a hardwired alternative).
