The author highlighted the important issue of diversity at the most recent annual meeting of the American Arbitration Association (AAA) Board of Directors, at which he reported on their plans to make diversity in ADR a priority, and invited the AAA board members to facilitate this goal with suggestions, and offers of assistance. Their commitment to diversity applies to their workforce, roster of neutrals, and board of directors. They have made progress diversifying the panel, but clearly more needs to be done. Presently, in round numbers, women and minorities make up approximately 20% of all of their panel and without that total figure the percentage of minorities on the panel is quite low, approximately 7%. They are also developing a software program that provides an error message if the 20% minimum is not achieved.
