The author argues that forms of suffering which hinder God's purpose for human being become truly evil, stressing that collective evil (Auschwitz, natural disaster, wars, media labeling, etc.) are a dehumanizing force. Instead, he raises a critical and practical question-what does evil do? A goal of this volume is to promote a pastoral theodicy that does not strive to explain suffering and evil but to resist and transform it via the Christian community and to enable Christians to reside in the midst of unanswered questions until Christ returns.
