Description: In December 2007 and January 2008, Independent Equipment Company (IEC), with the assistance of ELFA, conducted a confidential Internet survey of about 400 equipment managers and consultants throughout the U.S., regarding what's hot, what's not in equipment leasing for 2008. This year marks the fourth straight year of recovery within the industry. This year's survey shows that leasing companies appear to be targeting specific types of equipment, as illustrated by some of the high weighted future opportunity scores accompanied by increasing residual values; while other types are largely abandoned, due to perceived risks, as shown by some of the very low scores and falling residual values. In addition, although residual values returned to historic norms last year, for 2008, two-thirds of the equipment types surveyed will have their residual value positions lowered, as leasing companies become more conservative, perhaps in reaction to a slowing economy, and the sub-prime mortgage market meltdown affecting many banks, leasing, and finance companies.
