O'Gorman said in his report: ... given that the mineralization contains appreciable quantities of germanium as well as zinc in the order of 20 percent zinc and 250 g/t (7.27 oz/st) germanium, a production rate of 50 t/d (55 stpd) of concentrates (100 t/d or 110 stpd mining rate) would provide 10 percent of the world market needs for germanium and seriously affect project economics. The recent growth in infrared security products, silicongermaniumbased wireless telecommunications networks, applications for germanium as a substrate in the manufacturing of the popular led's (light emitting diodes) and new catalysts has created what could be an explosive growth in demand for germanium. Automobile manufacturers such as Chrysler and BMW, have already begun to implement night vision systems made with germanium lenses, allowing drivers to see three times farther.
