The project is a joint venture of mining giant London, England-based Anglo American and The Hague, Netherlands-based Shell Oil. The goal is to turn the country's vast brown coal resource in the Latrobe Valley in Victoria, Australia, into high-quality diesel fuel. The carbon dioxide produced would then be pumped into a depleted oilfield 50 miles (80 kilometers) offshore in the Bass Straits, which separates mainland Australia from Tasmania.
