In an interview, Marilyn B Tavenner, FACHE, Secretary of Health and Human Resources, Virginia State Government, talked about about her career. She said that the office is responsible for 12 agencies, approximately 18,000 employees statewide, and a $9 billion budget. Fifty percent of her work entails overseeing the operations of various departments, agencies, and services throughout the state. The other 50% involves developing policy and legislation and speaking in public forums regarding their initiatives. As the secretary, she is the liaison between the governor's office and the legislature and between the governor and the heads of state agencies. As a hospital CEO, my clinical background gave her a tremendous advantage in her role because she understood all the work involved in providing care. In the private sector, they championed the standardizations and consolidation of materials management, hospital business offices, and other services. In the public sector, they applied strategies to expand RN programs.
