Companies eager to implement Web 2.0 for collaboration purposes in the enterprise and those vendors with products to sell will be better positioned to succeed by preparing themselves -- to the extent that they can -- for the fundamental changes that these technologies will bring to their organizations. According to John Newton, CTO and chairman, Alfresco, not only does Web-based collaboration change the way companies behave on the inside, it also changes the way businesses interact with the outside world. They're using outside blogs to find out what's going on in the industry and what's being said about the company. They're using references on Wikipedia to gain and share insight. Newton believes that in addition to mandating an enterprise that is more horizontal and more adaptable, the influx of Web 2.0 technologies into the business environment will foster -- and perhaps necessitate -- more openness as well. Newton sees a seriousness of purpose in social networking.
