For half a century the Santa Fe Trail was the road of Manifest Destiny, of national greatness and personal dreams, the road to prairie farmland, to Rocky Mountain gold, to Spanish trade goods, to California sun. Between 1870 and 1880 the population of Pawnee County soared from 170 to 5,396.\n In time for the sixtieth anniversary of the discovery of Pluto, Lowell Observatory had refurbished the observatory dome and telescope Tombaugh had used, which would be opened for public tours.
