Reading/Language Arts: Persuasion Using Opposing Viewpoints

The library media specialist and the classroom teacher will collaborate to develop and implement a lesson instructing students in the art of writing for persuasion by researching and organizing opposing viewpoints. The library media specialist gathers copies of the various Opposing Viewpoints book series for in-class use, prepares a short PowerPoint presentation illustrating issues and their opposing viewpoints, and arranges for computer access for all students during instruction. Using the smart board, the library media specialist presents a short PowerPoint, giving examples of issues with controversial pro and con viewpoints to help the students select a topic and identify opposing viewpoints for their exit card and final persuasive essay.
