Defining the origins is not the central purpose of this work, so no conclusions are drawn, but the section on the German Schimmelreiter (Rider of the White Horse) tradition is thought-provoking for all those interested in Christmas customs. The final chapter draws together a number of themes, including costume, horses, musicians, and contexts for performance. It does a very good job of recording the details and context of a folk tradition and is a valuable addition to folklore and hobby horse literature.
