Job: Controller Job Description: The Controller will be responsible for assisting the Director in identifying and delivering a broad range of services to the clients of the family office. The Controller will also assist in coordinating services with the clients’ outside advisors and service providers. The Controller will have primary responsibility for overseeing the Staff Accountant and helping to develop and maintain the administration and operations of the family office structure. Duties: • Prepare and review individual, trust, partnership, and foundation income tax projections • Assist the Director in identifying and implementing tax planning opportunities in the areas of income, estate, and gift tax • Research tax issues • Coordinate services with outside advisors and service providers (lawyers, accountants, insurance brokers, bankers, investment advisors) • Review and produce written summaries of various legal documents including estate planning documents, LLC agreements, service provider contracts • Assist Director in developing relevant reports for clients including estimated income, balance sheet, statement of position for investments, and valuation reports • Implement various software products including a general ledger and bookkeeping system (Great Plains), partnership accounting system (Investran), and a comprehensive reporting system (yet to be determined) • Interface with clients and their families as necessary, providing them with a high level of service • Assist in developing and maintaining a system of internal controls • Work with Staff Accountant to maintain data, develop standard operating procedures, and implement best practices • Review work of others in the department as necessary • Maintain accounting and tax records and supporting schedules for clients and various legal entities Education/Experience/Skills: • 5+ years experience in a public accounting firm or similar environment such as a family office or financial planning firm; A CFP, CPA, JD, MST or related designation strongly preferred • General accounting knowledge including partnership accounting, capital account maintenance, general ledger, and cash accounting • Strong income tax knowledge and skills in the areas of individual, partnership, and trust as well as gift and estate tax. • Strong computer skills, ability to master complex software systems, and maximize efficiency through automation • Proficient in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point) • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills • Research skills including knowledge of RIA Checkpoint or comparable research software • Strong organizational skills, ability to think and plan ahead • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize and meet deadlines Profile: • Enjoys challenges associated with complexity • Intellectually creative and curious • Ability to work with highly sensitive and confidential information • Maintains a professional demeanor that inspires trust and respect of clients • Detail orientated; likes developing and maintaining organizational systems • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team environment that promotes inclusiveness and communication among team members Berkshire Partners is developing a multi-family office to service its Managing Directors and their families. Julia Selvig, Advisory Director, and Daniel Carbonneau, Director are responsible for the development of the business. Julia was the CFO of Berkshire Partners for 20 years before heading the initiative to develop the new business. Daniel, during his tenure as a Director of Tax Services with PricewaterhouseCoopers, has provided tax services to the Managing Directors over the years and brings continuity of service and information to the family office. Julia and Daniel report to a board comprised of four of the Managing Directors of Berkshire Partners. The Controller will report to Daniel Carbonneau. The family office, as a new business, is in the process of developing systems, legal structure and a platform to provide services to clients. It is currently in the process of selecting a roster of outside advisors to provide various services to it and its clients, including estate planning, philanthropic planning, insurance products, investment advisory services and private banking. The family office seeks a Controller to assist with the development of systems and procedures and who will be focused on providing excellent service to clients. Given the highly personal nature of family office services, we are seeking an individual who is interested in a long term, career position with the firm.
