As we start a new year and a new political administration takes over, I’d like to share it with you, dear readers, my East Cobb friends. May this poem and this edition inspire you! I sit in front of the White House, the ultimate symbol of my government, just four days after a most historic election, and from here I pray. From here I pray for our new leader. May God bless Mr. Obama with wisdom and strength, insight and fortitude, and the ability to lead our nation through perilous waters and calm. From here I pray for our current President. May God grant Mr. Bush peaceful respite from the burdens of power, and serenity from his belief that he did what he thought was right, for better or worse. From here I pray for the insight of perspective, that in days to come we will better understand these past eight years and where we are today. From here I pray for the citizens of the world. May we all inhabit a planet that fosters the best in humanity, and seek to overcome the worst in human nature. From here I pray for my fellow countrymen. May we come to realize that there are no “my” problems or “your” problems, but only “our” problems, that we will solve together or suffer accordingly. From here I pray for the supporters of Mr. Obama. May they celebrate their victory with prideful humility and suppress the urge to settle scores. We all need a leader, not just the ones who voted for the victor. From here I pray for those who supported another. May they set aside distrust and disappointment and help to bring an end to the visceral anger or hatred that permeates all too much of our society. From here I pray for those who hate. Whether the hate is based on skin color or views, beliefs or background, may God open their minds and heal their hearts, and may each generation hate less and love more. From here I pray for those who are hated. May God ease their pain and heal their wounds, and may they find the wisdom and compassion to practice forgiveness, whether those they forgive deserve it or not. From here I pray for my family and friends. May they enjoy peace and prosperity, health and happiness. And if they cannot fix the problems of the world, may they at least be part of the solution. May they help make their own part of the world better by their presence. From here I pray for my dear wife. May God grant us many more years together and allow us to celebrate much happiness and appreciate our blessings. From here I pray for our children. May they never lose their youthful idealism. May they always work to make their world better than they found it. May they come as adults to where I pray, and find that this house, the People’s House, remains a symbol of all that is great about this country I love, and the people who make it so. From here I pray. --By Bret Keisling of Harrisburg, PA Happy New Year! Cynthia M. Rozzo Editor/Publisher January 2009 EAST COBBER www.eastcobber.com On The Cover Baby of the Year: Hailey Ann Trainer Our cover this month features Baby of the Year Hailey Ann Trainer. As has been our annual tradition, the EAST COBBER ran a promotion in its fall editions, asking readers to submit photos of their little bundles of joy. From those entries, 11month-old Hailey was selected to be photographed for the front cover of the January issue. Hailey is the fourth child of Shauna and Mark Trainer, who live in the Plantation Place subdivision. Shauna sent several photographs of her beautiful daughter, but it was her daughter’s story that stood out. At 8 months old, Shauna was diagnosed with a malignant neoplasm of the cerebellum (brain cancer) on September 25th last year. This is a rare and highly aggressive form of brain cancer. She is currently at Scottish Rite and has been for the past 3 months. She has undergone 2 rounds of chemo, 6 brain surgeries, countless infections and tests but is still holding her own and battling this disease. Hailey has received treatment at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in the Neurosciences department, Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service and the Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (CIRU). As Shauna wrote, “I am entering this contest for two reasons, the first being that Hailey is absolutely beautiful. The second reason for entering is that it is my desire now and forever to raise awareness about the need for more childhood cancer research. Through this situation, I have come to be involved with the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research. It is a non-profit organization that gives 93 cents of every dollar to fund research for childhood cancer. It began in this area 3 years ago and has raised amazing amounts of money for this cause. You can read more about this organization at www.rallyfoundation.org. Hailey Trainer is one of the Rally kids. You can read about her there or at her website at www.caringbridge.org/visit/haileyanntrainer. With the help of the good Lord, Hailey’s three siblings - five-year-old MacKenzie, four-year-old Dylan, and two-yearold Jason - her father and myself, along with an amazing team of doctors and nurses, we believe she will pull through and be a living miracle to the world. My goal is to spread the word and tell the world about Hailey, childhood cancer, and the power of prayer and positive thinking.” Since Hailey has been unable to leave the hospital, the photograph was taken at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta CIRU by Amber Rae Johnson of CLIX Portrait Studios. EAST COBBER January 2009 Make A new Year’s Resolution To Volunteer At the start of each new year, people make a list of things they are going to do to improve their lives. We say we are going to eat less and work out more. Think about making resolutions that will not only help you, but help your community. Volunteerism can take many forms. Whether you choose to spend time helping out at your local library, mentoring a child, or building a house, there are many nonprofit volunteer organizations that could really use your help. Or if your time is in short supply, consider donating furniture, clothing, and other household items that you no longer need. When you donate instead of dispose of items, it lessens the burden on our landfills. In addition to our local schools, synagogues and churches, here’s a sampling of some local, nonprofit organizations that are in need of volunteers, financial contributions and/or miscellaneous donations. Participate in the Political Process “Government is too big and too important to be left to the politicians.” —Chester Bowles (1901 - 1986) Your representatives want to hear from you. If you have a concern or a question, don’t hesitate to contact them. “During the legislative session it is best to call or fax your Legislator, rather than e-mail them. They will get the message much quicker than an e-mail; sometimes during the session they do not have time to check their e-mails, so it is much better that a constituent call and leave a message with staff or send a fax,” says Abby Shiffman, PTA Legislation Chair for the Eastern Cobb County Council of PTAs. To find out what’s going on during the legislative session, The League of Women Voters publishes a weekly legislative monitor. This is a free service provided by the League at no charge for the electronic version. For hard copy, a nominal printing fee will be charged. To subscribe to the list, go to www.lwvga.org. After overeating during the holidays, many East Cobbers vow to hit the gym and shed some pounds. For those who overspent, this is the perfect time to assess your financial situation and vow to make some adjustments. In the interest of your fiscal fitness, we contacted a few local experts for their advice on savings, investments, taxes, retirement, and financial planning. Read on for their 2009 financial workouts. it pays to have a plan “Courage is the resistance to fear.” Mark Twain By W. Robert McGoldrick, CPA, CFP > Be prepared for the rainy day - The first thing I recommend to all of my financial planning clients is to have an Emergency Cash Reserve fund. This Emergency fund should be equal to about three to four months of the household expenses. Also, it should be invested in something liquid and safe, such as a passbook savings account, a money market account or even a short-term certificate of deposit (CD). >Take responsibility for your debt and pay it off wisely - If you have created excessive credit card debt, acknowledge it as your responsibility. The credit card company did not force you to use the card. Cut up the credit card and pay off the debt immediately. It should be paid off before monies are set aside for retirement. >No one is going to loan you money to retire – You owe it to yourself, your spouse and your children to save for retirement. The first step in this process is determining how much you think will be needed to fund your retirement. Your financial planner or investment advisor can help you with this. Think long-term and keep your eye on the prize. > Pick the low hanging fruit first – An employer sponsored 401(k) Plan is usually one of the simplest and least expensive ways to save for retirement. If you are not participating in your employer sponsored 401(k) Plan, you are losing out in two ways. First is the tax deferred savings opportunity. This is one of the last and best tax deferral methods available to the taxpayer. If you are in a 25 percent tax bracket, for every $100 you put in the 401(k) Plan, you save $25 in federal income tax. Also, most plans match your savings up to four percent. Now that is what I call instant gratification! Year-end tips and comments By P Palvia, Tax, Accounting & Financial Advisor .K. > Donate now – Clean out those closets and garage space. Make the contribution you’ve been planning all year. Save the receipts! > Sell stocks that are losing money – One is allowed a maximum loss of $3,000 on your tax return. So, if you have some gains sell off some losers and offset them. Any excess over the $3,000 will carry over to next year. > Use up your cafeteria plan – You have through March 15 to use the money set aside from your paycheck to pay for items such as day care and eye examinations. Or stock up on necessary over-the-counter meds before time runs out. The Obama Administration and investment strategy Taken from Edward Jones’s “Will New Administration Affect Your Investment Moves?” By Stephen A. Teague, Financial Advisor, Edward Jones > Follow the progress of new legislation – For example, will a successful push toward “green” energy benefit renewable energy companies? Right now, no one can answer this question. In fact, even if these changes are enacted, it will take some time to sort them out to determine what, if any, impact they could have on various market sectors. So your best bet is to watch the course of legislation and its aftermath. >You don’t have to make major changes to your investment strategy – In the case of capital gains taxes, you can delay them by simply holding on to your stocks for the long term – which you should be doing anyway, as stocks are long-term invested. And even if the dividend tax increases, dividend-paying stocks may still be good investment choices, because they usually represent solid, profitable companies that seek to reward their investors. However, if you are concerned about the effect of higher capital gains and dividend taxes, you may want to consider an investment such as tax-exempt municipal bonds. You’ll benefit most from these “munis” if you’re in one of the higher tax brackets. >You may want to “rebalance” your portfolio – As you review possible changes in your investment strategy due to moves made by the new administration, you may want to take the opportunity to “rebalance” your portfolio by adjusting your investment mix. Under normal circumstances, such rebalancing could involve capital gains considerations, since you might be selling appreciated assets. However, given the steep market decline of recent months, it’s quite possible that you can now sell part of your assets at a loss to offset any gains you might have – and if you don’t have any gains, you can carry the loss forward to future years. So pay attention to what is happening in Washington, and, at the same time, look for opportunities to rebalance. But keep in mind that your long-term investment strategy should be based on your individual needs, goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. And that’s true in all political and economic environments. The new homeowner, Jennifer Howell stands with her children. Specializing in Custom Built Homes, Basements & Remodeling In 1992, a small group of Mt. Bethel men and women responded to God’s call and formed Mt. Bethel’s Habitat Ministry. Later that year, they built a Habitat home for the first Mt. Bethel family who escaped poverty housing. During the last sixteen years, Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church has built 25 homes and has become the leading builder for our Cobb Habitat affiliate. Cobb Habitat ranks 16th out of Habitat International’s 1600 affiliates. Mt. Bethel builds about 10% of Cobb Habitat homes. A Habitat for Humanity House begins with a thorough selection process to choose the family. Homeowners are required to work 100 hours building their home and an additional 100 hours building Habitat homes for others. The homeowners are also required to attend 100 hours of Provident Living classroom instruction on topics such personal financial management, child development, career advancement, and home maintenance. Habitat homes are built for no profit and are made available to the homeowner on an interest-free basis. Homeowners purchase their homes and make monthly mortgage payments over a 20- to 25-year period, repaying the sponsor’s fee and land costs. Cobb Habitat is collecting monthly mortgage payments from most of Mt. Bethel’s 25 homeowners and using these funds to purchase land and to build more Habitat homes. Mt. Bethel’s annual Habitat Road Race proceeds and church members’ donations made years ago are still at work building affordable housing for those in need. Mt. Bethel builds a Habitat home with about 250 volunteer work days over a 14-day schedule. In addition to “driving the nails” and “painting the walls,” there are countless volunteers working behind the scenes managing Mt. Bethel’s Habitat Road Race fundraiser, recruiting and scheduling volunteers, promoting the build, coordinating groups, and providing food for the builders. www.eastcobber.com 770.590.1506 Support Our Advertisers January 2009 EAST COBBER For Affordable Health Insurance YOU NEED A BROKER! William Bugg and pianist Kathryn Fouse performed in Carnegie Hall last fall, the program included a new work by former East Cobb resident, Joel Scott Davis. Davis, a 2005 Samford graduate who is now a master’s doctorate of musical arts degree student in composition at Claremont Graduate University in California, wrote, “Songs About God” specifically for the Carnegie recital. Davis, who is a 2001 honors graduate of Walton High School is the son of Bill and Cynthia Davis of East Cobb. While Bugg and Fouse have each performed before in Carnegie Hall, it was the first time that the young composer had a work heard in the celebrated New York City venue. “I was excited and honored,” Davis said of having the piece performed in Carnegie, and at being asked by the Samford School of the Arts faculty members to contribute to the program. When the musicians approached Davis about composing a piece with a southern theme or their Big Apple recital, his search of literature led to a 1919 copy of poetry by John Crowe Ransom. Paige Norwood Jennings, PC Collaborative Lawyer www.paigejennings.com The work by the Tennessee poet made an immediate impression on Davis, who found Ransom’s poetry feisty and thought-provoking. He shared the poems with Bugg and Fouse, who helped select the four that are part of the completed work. “Songs About God” is Davis’ fifth commissioned composition. Here are some of our own local PTA “Champions of Wellness” and their wonderful programs: > Tritt Elementary School PTA is no longer providing unhealthy food events such as “Ice Cream Parties” as rewards for our various programs. Instead, the winning class or group wins extra recess time called “Out to Lunch Bunch” staffed by PTA volunteers. Additionally, the Tritt PTA has become much more aware of what types of foods served at the various functions. For example, they have abandoned their old practice of serving donuts at the “Reflections” breakfast, and served low-fat muffins instead. During Red Ribbon Week, they did not hand out red lollipops or candy as promotional items, but gave items such as stickers, pencils and water bottles! Teacher buyin is one of the crucial points in the success of implementing the Cobb County Wellness Program at Tritt Elementary School . Therefore, the Health and Youth Services Committee sponsored a Teacher Wellness Promotion Contest in which the teachers would share their ideas and best practices of how they promote wellness in their classrooms and how they communicate the importance of a healthy lifestyle with students and their families. The PTA Board of Directors served as contest judges and awarded gift cards to be spent on classroom supplies to the top three teacher entries. This contest assisted in creating a buzz about the Wellness Program among the teachers and encouraged them to be creative and share effective ideas with their colleagues. > Last year, the Health and Wellness Committee at Shallowford Falls Elementary School began a program called “Fresh Fruit Friday.” The Committee purchases the fruit from a local co-op farm. Each week the fruit is sponsored by a different family or student in honor of a birthday, special event or accomplishment. The fruit is available for free to the students and teachers in large bowls placed throughout the school. The program has caught on, and the bowls are always empty by the end of the day. Complimenting the fruit program, this Committee educates the students and parents of the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity. Awareness was increased by publishing the “Fit Foxes” newsletter, where we explain the importance of health and nutrition, especially for young, growing children. The newsletter includes Five Fit Facts, where we might explain how the nutrients in raw fruits and vegetables help prevent and reduce the risk of disease. We try to enforce the importance of a healthy immune system, supported by the fresh fruit we provide. We keep the parents involved by having them submit articles highlighting their family’s physical fitness accomplishments, or sharing healthy recipes, meals and snacks. Each time a family donates money for Fresh Fruit Friday, they are acknowledged during the school’s morning announcements. >Morning Walk” has been an amazing success at Murdock Eleme ntary School. Students in grades 2-5 have an opportunity to walk around the track 2 days each week between 7:25 and 7:50. First graders walk every Friday morning! The response from students has been amazing. Students come to class feeling energized and ready to learn. This is a wonderful initiative to support the improvement of the mind and the body! > At Mt. Bethel Elementary School, a Healthy Celebrations flier was distributed, along with a Kroger Fresh Fruit Coupon. The coupon was very well received by parents. “Friendship Fruit Salad” is a project scheduled for spring, where January 2009 each child in the classroom will bring in a piece of cut up fruit, to be mixed into a Friendship Salad for the kids to share. Each child will bring in a piece of fruit to ‘trade’ with someone else. This may encourage them to try new fruits! Mt. Bethel PTA Lunch ‘n Learn Committee recently presented “Nutrition 101,” which included information for parents about reading labels, balancing nutritional requirements, where to find recipe books for kids and adults, and other helpful tips. A column called “Healthy Habits” appears monthly in the school Newsletter, featuring students’ favorite healthy recipes. The annual Fun Run will include a Health Fair, and plans for this Spring include a “Walk or Ride to School Day,” which will reinforce the healthy habit of including physical activity in our daily routines! > The Health Committee at Kincaid Elementary School sponsored a full week of healthy choices. One day we handed out apples for everyone as a healthy choice. Another day it was water. One day we encouraged all the students to participate in ‘Walking Club’ before school started. Another day, teachers were encouraged to focus their creative writing assignments on healthy choices as the theme. Another day was ‘turn off the tv/computer and video games’ and pick up a book to exercise your minds. Lastly, kids and parents were urged to sit down to plan out a menu of healthy meals for the next week. In addition to this, Kincaid serves only fresh vegetables. No more canned or frozen items! > East Side Elementary will soon begin it’s “Fit in Third” program! Three years ago, East Side successfully implemented a “Fit in Fifth” program. This program was designed to teach 5th graders about nutrition and exercise. Each fifth grade class had a parent volunteer teach a lesson to the kids each month. The lessons ranged from learning about the cardiovascular system to learning how to read food labels. East Side will use this successful program as a model to launch a 5 month “Fit in Third” program beginning in January 2009. The third graders will have a parent volunteer visit the class once a month and teach about exercise, nutrition and body image. > Sope Creek Elementary has implemented a version of “Fresh Fruit Friday.”. Volunteer parents participate by handing out the donated fruit to students on Friday mornings, reinforcing the idea that fruit is a fabulous choice for a snack or as part of a meal. During daily televised morning announcements, the “Wellness Wake-up Call” is read. This is a 9-month series of short one or two-line healthy hints or facts about health and nutrition that can have significant positive impact on wellness in the school environment. Several teachers are using stickers and pencils, instead of candy as a reward for student achievement, in support of the District Wellness Policy. Sope Creek’s School Garden project has produced tomatoes, beans, cantaloupe, squash, lettuce, broccoli and brussel sprouts so far. Providing experiential learning opportunities in our garden reconnects our students with their environment, teaches eco-consciousness and demonstrates a sustainable source of healthy, whole foods in our community. All of these “Champions” continue to contribute significantly to the improved health and wellness of children here in Cobb County! Kim Arasin lives in Hampton Woods subdivision with her husband, Mike, and their daughters Katie, age 9; Ali, age 8; and, son, Avery, age 8. All three are students at Mt. Bethel Elementary School. www.eastcobber.com EAST COBBER Make A Healthy Contribution To Your Kids’ Diets By Natalie Rogers, Health and Wellness Committee Co-Chair, Eastern Cobb County Council of PTAs. Are you that parent? Are you the parent who brings in “ice-apples” (either whole apples or apple slices, served on a tray of ice) when it’s your turn to provide snacks for your child’s class? Are you the parent who sends “powerballs” (frozen red and green grapes) and good old-fashioned water for the game-break at the soccer field? Are you the parent who came up with that great idea to use cucumbers cut into shapes to entice the kindergartners to sample hummus (or cucumbers, for that matter!) for the first time? Are you the parent who feels terrific about the healthy eating habits your food/beverage contributions are reinforcing in the lives of other people’s children as well as your own? Are you that parent? Well, if you ARE that parent, we commend you on a job well done! Not only did you resist the urge to provide nutrient poor/calorie dense/ ”sugary treat” foods/beverages that have become “all the time foods,” rather than “sometimes foods” in the eating patterns of today’s children, but you considered that the very nature of the activities the children were participating in warranted food/ beverage replenishment that would enable them to perform at their best, both physically AND mentally! You did not cave when you pondered for a brief moment the possibility that your child’s friends might ostracize him/her because it’s their parent who always brings the healthy stuff! Nope, when it came right down to it, that entire tray of “ice apples” was devoured in a matter of minutes! Didn’t hear a bit of complaining from the kids either, did you? The frozen grapes were gone in a flash, AND after the healthy feast, you were delighted to find that there were no plastic wrappers and foil packages littering the area, that you would then be contributing to the landfill! Through your thoughtful consideration, you afforded your child and several others with the opportunity to increase their intake of healthy, fresh fruits and veggies, such that they might actually have achieved the 3-5 servings recommended daily for their proper, healthy growth and development! Keep up the fantastic healthy contributions! ECCC Health and Wellness Committee Chairs, Kim Arasin and Natalie Rogers are grateful for your efforts and Cobb County’s children are a step closer to “wellness” because of YOU!! Be THAT parent! Natalie Rogers lives in the Rivermill Subdivision with her husband Evan, and daughter, Avery, 7, a student at Sope Creek Elementary. The Board of Commissioners will vote on these zonings Tuesday, January 20, at 9am. These listings are provided by the East Cobb Civic Association. The comments are included with each zoning listing. Petition Z-55 Continued from November PC Zoning hearing: Lynwood Development Group, LLC, represented by John H. Moore, Moore Ingram Johnson & Steele, LLP requests , rezoning from OHR to UC. Property is located on the southeasterly side of Interstate North Parkway, south of Windy Hill Road (between 2225 and 2788 Interstate North Parkway). Proposed use(s): Residential Condominium. Proposed unit square footage(s): One bedroom: 800 to 1,200 s.f. Two bedroom: 1,000 to 1,600 s.f. Three bedroom: 1,200 to 2,000 s.f. Proposed building architecture: Brick, stone, stacked-stone, stucco type, hardi-plank. Proposed selling price(s): $300,000 to $850,000. Proposed rental price(s): $1,100 to $2,100 monthly. Requested variance(s): None known at this time. Other pertinent information: Number of units: 320. Building: Single, 5 story building with an attached parking garage. Size of tract is 5.68 acres. Current zoning: OHR. Proposed use: Residential Condominiums. Staff recommends DENIAL: The UC zoning district is intended for individual ownership of the units, not for leasing all the units. The UC projects previously approved by the Board of Commissioners have not been for leased units; approval of the request may give the applicant an unfair advantage over nearby owner-occupied projects, which are slowly selling units. Additionally, the applicant’s proposal includes two substantial variances to the UC zoning district: Reduce side setback from 35-feet to 10-feet and reduce the required number of parking spaces from 560 parking spaces to 480 parking spaces ECCA position: We support the position of the Terrell Mill Neighborhood Association. Petition luP-28 Continued from November PC Zoning hearing: Michael Drewitz, represented by James A. Balli, Sams, Larkin & Huff LLP requests a land use permit for the , purpose of a photography studio. Property is located on the northern side of Robinson Road, west of Hidden Hollow Drive (3555 Robinson Road). Type of business: Photography studio. Number of employees: One. Proposed hours/days of operation: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Monday – Friday. Number of clients, customers or sales people: 15 – 20 / week. Where do clients, customers or sales people park: Driveway. Signs: No. Number of vehicles: 2. Type of vehicles: SUV, car. Deliveries: Yes, 2 per week. Does applicant live in house: Yes. Any outdoor storage: No. Storage of inventory: Photos within office. Additional relevant information: See attached stipulation letter, and Exhibit A. Size of tract is 0.45 acres. Current zoning: R-20. Current land use is Low Density Residential. Proposed use: Photography Studio. ECCA position: NO ACTION. Applicant has quietly run his business from this location for a number of years with no complaints. His neighbors support him. Petition luP-29: James Palmer, Sr. and John Palmer, represented by John Palmer, requests to be allowed to have more than two unrelated people to occupy a dwelling unit. 30 January 2009 Property is located on the northeast intersection of Flagstone Lane (private road) and Gardengate Way (private road), south of Powers Ferry Road (2301 Gardengate Way, Gardenside at Powers Ferry subdivision). Size of tract is 0.10 acres. Current zoning: RM-8. Current land use is Medium Density Residential. Proposed use: More than two unrelated people to occupy a dwelling unit. ECCA position: Not available yet. Planning Commission Action: Case not heard yet. Petition luP-30: Emerson Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, represented by Donald B. King, requests a land use permit for the purpose of a mobile classroom (renewal). Property is located on the west side of Holly Springs Road, south of Frankie Lane (2799 Holly Springs Road). Size of tract is 5.512 acres. Current zoning: R-20. Current land use is Low Density Residential. Proposed use: Mobile classroom. ECCA position: Not available yet. The following is a list of variances to be reviewed by the Board of Zoning Appeals Wednesday, January 7, at 1pm. Petition V-115: A & M Dental Office, LLC, represented by Michael S. Mansouri, requests: 1) Waive the side setback from the required 15 feet to 10 feet adjacent to the eastern property line (existing); and 2) Waive the minimum lot size from the required 20,000 square feet to 19,798 square feet (existing). Property is located on the south side of Lower Roswell Road, east of Woodlawn Drive (4720 Lower Roswell Road). Size of tract is 0.43 acres or 18,731 s.f. Present zoning is NS (20,000 s.f. lots). Land use category: Community Activity Center (CAC). Reason: The hardship that the 62 foot setback would cause is: Visibility at sign would be severely restricted because of topography and the existing sign of an adjacent property. ECCA position: Not available yet. Petition V-118: Episcopal Church of Peter & Paul, represented by L. Craig Dowdy, requests allowing an electrical sign (i.e., reader board sign) on a lot zoned R-20. Property is located on the west side of Johnson Ferry Road west of Bishop Lake Road (1795 Johnson Ferry Road). Size of tract is 7.82 acres. Present zoning is R-20. Land use category: Low Density Residential (LDR). Should St. Peter & St. Paul not be granted a variance to allow an electronic sign, an unnecessary hardship would result as the church would be unduly and uniquely restricted in its communications with the community that it serves, and will suffer financial loss as the electronic sign has already been purchased under a misunderstanding as to zoning requirements. The hardship, which would be imposed, is unnecessary. Although the church is located in a residential area at 1795 Johnson Ferry Rd., the area surrounding the front of the church where the sign would be located is not residential in character, and a sign could not be viewed from any residence. In September, 2007, St. Peter & St. Paul’s conventional sign located in front of the church was destroyed by an out of control automobile. In considering a replacement sign, the church’s vestry, which is the governing board of the church, realized the advantages of an electronic sign, which could be programmed to >>>continued on next page www.eastcobber.com EAST COBBER show messages, and decided to investigate the installation of such a sign. An electronic sign would allow the church to communicate with the parish community, and the larger community about selected events in a way not possible with conventional signage. Prior to acquiring an electronic sign, a member of the vestry did inquire of the county whether additional zoning or permitting would be necessary, and understood that it would not be. This resulted from a good faith misunderstanding. The vestry member spoke of replacing our current sign, and did not know to make the distinction between replacing it with a conventional sign and replacing the destroyed sign with an electronic sign. Therefore, under the mistaken belief that a variance would not be required, the vestry purchased the electronic sign. Nine thousand dollars, was available from the insurance settlement for the destroyed sign, but the electronic sign uninstalled cost $29,000. The sign is awaiting installation, and under the contract with the manufacturer cannot be returned for any refund. Should its use not be permitted, the church will realize no benefit from the purchase and the expended funds will be simply lost. St. Peter & St. Paul therefore respectfully requests that it be granted a variance for the proposed electronic sign. ECCA position: Not available yet. This information was provided by the East Cobb Civic Association. The East Cobb Civic Association meets the last Wednesday of the month at 7pm. If starting the New Year brings chaos all around you, begin to trust and rely upon your discipline to take hold. Pull in the reins and focus on what is really important. This can be your best year ever! As you look at your objectives, challenges and goals for this New Year, know that you are the solution s Pete Allen – you and your support team. If you don’t have a support team, create one from your family, friends, business associates and other professionals. Your team’s mission is to help you with new ideas, making and implementing your plan and holding you accountable. Thank you for your responses and comments from the poll from last month’s column. They indicated that fear, depression and worry were the top 3 emotions people are feeling at this time. As indicated in the article, better solutions and creativity come when you are at the high end of your emotional state – feeling happy, empowered and joyful. Once you reach this emotional state, you are ready to move forward with creating a solution. It’s your clarity in thinking, creativity, initiative and resourcefulness that allows you to find solutions and to make things happen. These are the virtues that have helped you in the past and will do so in the future. Evaluate your business, whether you have your own business, work for a company or are retired. As we said before – if you have a checking account, you are in your own business. Perhaps your situation is one of the following: (1) Your business skills and services are being sold to a company as an employee and you have been laid off. (2) You might own your own business and the business is struggling in this economic environment. (3) You are about to retire or are already in retirement and you are being challenged by the environment. There are unique answers and strategies that are available to you. You may want to consider having a coach on your team. As a business and life coach of over 10 years, I’ve helped many individuals find those answers and strategies. Wishing you a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous new Year! The best to you in creating a great 2009! -Pete Contact Pete at peteaca@bellsouth.net or call 770-9772232. Cut ½ inch of the top of the garlic, drizzle with olive oil and salt and pepper. Wrap in foil and bake about 45 minutes. When the garlic is finished it should easily squeeze out of the cloves, then mash for paste. Cook pasta and bacon. Save 1 tablespoon of bacon fat and set aside. Crumble bacon when cool. Combine bacon, breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese and 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Sauté Shallots over low heat in bacon fat for 1 minute. Add 6 tablespoons of butter and continue to sauté until translucent. Add flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. Increase to medium heat. Stirring constantly with a whisk, add milk and garlic paste. Cook until sauce thickens and coats the spoon. Remove sauce from heat, then add salt, pepper, nutmeg, cheddar and gruyere cheeses. Stir in pasta and mix thoroughly but gently. Pour mixture in a 9x13 pan. Sprinkle breadcrumb and bacon mixture over it and cover with foil. Bake 15 min, remove foil and bake until bubbly. It is something of a tradition that with the start of a new year people reflect upon their lives and make resolutions for the coming year. Although the making (and breaking) of new year’s resolutions is often relegated to the level of a joke, we might take a moment to reflect on where we are and where we’d like to go. I don’t mean in terms of the myriad material and social aspects of our lives, but rather on the spiritual level. The spiritual underlies all else, after all; success, health, and happiness can only be rooted there. The following brings you up to date on my spiritual journey and then some spiritual insights for the coming year. Did you know that creating something new means letting go of what no longer serves us? At the time my mother passed away in 2002, when I was 41 years old, I was the quintessential East Cobb housewife in a 15 year marriage that was unraveling, a mother of three, including a hormonal teenage daughter, ALTA tennis player, overcommitted PTA mom, real estate agent, and way too involved in my homeowner’s association….I was a perfect candidate for Prozac! Mom’s passing was the wake-up call that caused me to change my life. I came face to face with how fleeting life is, and I wasn’t as happy as I thought I should be by now. Instead of continuing to pretend my life was perfect, I chose to face my deepest fear: discovering who the heck I really am. Because I love instant gratification, I searched for the shortcut to happiness….although I didn’t find a quick fix I did find helpful pointers along the way. In my search for happiness, I discovered that the only way one can transform their circumstances is through the complete understanding of one’s mind. I underwent a spiritual awakening--I shed the ideas of who I was: a desperate East Cobb housewife whose life was dictated by the belief that my happiness was either in the hands of others or on sale at the Avenue. Little by little I began to let go of who I wasn’t as I witnessed the re-emergence of who I AM. Through my self-guided transformation, I co-created a peaceful divorce. I am more fit at 47 than ever before. I have found love again, and I am incredibly happy. I am at peace and live a purposedriven life. Inspired by my transformation, I created the Power of Awareness program, which includes workshops and life coaching sessions offered at The Center for Awareness LLC, in East Cobb. My happiness is compounded because I assist others in creating the happy lives they desire. I am so grateful that my mom’s passing became my wake-up call. In deliberately choosing a new life I found the courage to let go of the old one. So to 2009 I say: Bring on the New Year! Here are 4 pointers that moved me in the direction of my spiritual awakening: 1. Practice observing my thoughts. If my thoughts are negative, I choose positive thoughts instead. 2. I’m in tune with how my body feels. The body never lies. Being at ease and at peace is our natural state of being. Anything else is a warning sign. If I feel uneasy or tense, I search for the source of that discomfort so I can make adjustments. 3. I play a game called, “Shift & Lift.” If I experience fear-centered thoughts, I shift to love-centered thoughts. 4. I pray and meditate regularly. Through prayer I speak to God, and through meditation I listen for the answers. We are tested and challenged each step of the way; each difficulty we face gives us a stepping stone to deeper levels of spirituality. May you become, day by day and little by little, an even more radiant spirit. Laina Orlando is the founder of The Center for Awareness, 1240 Johnson Ferry Place, Suite B-10, Marietta. (404)229-4993 The Future of Fitness is Here It’s called “EXERTAINMENT.” Wouldn’t it be great if we could do 2 full hours of cardio workout and not even notice? Or how about having the luxury of all the fitness equipment you could ever want to play with and still be able to watch Oprah or any other of the 90 cable TV channels you would normally watch? “Exertainment” is the term coined by Ken Lynch, General Manager and partner of the East Cobb Just Fitness Facility. “My vision is to help create Generation ‘H’ – the healthiest generation ever. If we can get people to exercise regularly by making it easier and more enjoyable physically, emotionally and financially, they’re much more likely to be successful no matter what their situation or age,” Ken states passionately. At first glance the massive 22,000 plus square foot facility is impressive. The 30,000 lbs. of free weights and aisles of enough cable resistance machines make waiting for someone to finish their set a thing of the past. Each piece of cardio equipment – the ellipticals, bicycles and every treadmill – has its own individual HD television set. One can watch TV at will unlike the traditional fitness center where the TV sets hanging from the ceilings are set to only one channel. A futurescape of going to the movies, the cinema, and getting a cardio workout at the same time is something we’d be more likely to find at Disney’s Epcot Center, but the future is here, in East Cobb. The Just Fitness Facility, located at the corner of Old Canton Road and Roswell Road, also boasts a full cinema. Instead of seats, the theater includes several aisles of cardio equipment – treadmills, bicycles and ellipticals – an enormous movie screen with theater surround sound all in a darkened theater room where each day a different Blockbuster film is shown and looped throughout the day. What could you possibly add to your experience of a hard workout at the movies? Well, how about sitting in the facility’s Daily Grind Café and sipping a soothing latte or a healthy fruit smoothie while checking your email on the free WiFi? Just Fitness is certainly setting trends with its innovated and futuristic concepts, but the cherry that tops it all is the $10 a month no contract deal. Ken Lynch says, “We’re not selling fitness memberships, we’re motivating individuals to get healthy. We keep the costs way down and can offer much lower prices without contracts.” Ken Lynch invites readers to stop by Just Fitness, 3101 Roswell Road, and discover the future of fitness. CALL EAST COBBER 770-640-7070 0 January 2009 EAST COBBER www.eastcobber.com A new Year A new Perspective By Amy Head 2009--A new year, a new beginning. We say, “Out with the old and in with the new;” but, we often end up with, “Out with the old and back in with the old.” It goes something like, “In January, I am going to tackle those closets” but by March there is one closet halfway organized and a bag of clothes waiting for Goodwill. Or, “I am going to make good use of those healthy recipes” but, by February, we are cooking the same old four or five meals. We do this with our health and fitness. Our resolutions are well-intended but soon we are “back in with the old” ruts. Why is it so hard to stay motivated especially when it comes to our health and wellness? Maybe it has to do with our perspective. Successful wellness is not about diet and exercise or carbs vs. proteins. Successful wellness is really about personal passion. Let’s think about it. If there is no passion, then, eventually, there is less hope that we will achieve our desired level of wellness. With passion comes motivation and determination because we are doing what we love. Are you a cook, a dancer, a sports enthusiast, a nature lover --- find your passion and build your health and wellness around what you love. So, out with the old and in with the new – let’s focus on our passions! Happy New Year! Amy Head is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has received a national fitness certification from the American Council on Exercise. Through her practice, New Perspectives for Life, Amy specializes in helping people to see that they are truly stronger emotionally than they think they are. A Breakthrough In Pain Relief By Daniel Martin, D.C. Are you suffering from chronic lower back or neck pain? Have you tried everything from medications, physical therapy to epidural shots? Have you been told that you have to have surgery or just live with the pain? Well now there might be a solution to your problem. Non-Surgical Spinal decompression is a non-invasive and non-surgical way to eliminate your pain. Spinal Decompression provides relief of pain and symptoms associated with herniated discs, bulging or protruding intervertebral discs, degenerative disc and sciatica. The theory behind spinal decompression is a process whereby forces are applied to the spine in a manner that maximizes spinal elongation. Spinal elongation is maximized when your muscles are relaxed. When your muscles relax, applied spinal decompressive forces spread apart the bony vertebra of the spine. This relieves pressure on nerves and the disc, being in your neck or lower back. Where this spinal elongation occurs, pressure drops within the disc which facilitates movement of fluid, carrying nutrients and oxygen inside the disc. Additionally, the reduction in pressure can help draw in herniated disc fluids, reducing the size of the herniation. However, not everyone is a candidate for this amazing new technology. So how do you know if you’re a candidate for spinal decompression? First you must be evaluated by your general doctor or a doctor that offers spinal decompression. Then it is always a good idea to have x-rays and a M.R.I. of the area to confirm the results of the evaluation. Once your doctor has determined that you are a candidate for spinal decompression then you will go through a series of decompression treatments. Each treatment is 30 minutes and you are placed on a heavilypadded bed. After being secured into position by an upper and lower body harness, the patient can completely relax and watch a DVD, listen to music, or simply take a nap. Typically, each 30-minute session is divided into 18-phases where the spinal decompressive forces alternate between a maximum and minimum therapeutic level. The cycling of forces in this manner appears to create a pumping action that simulates the natural processes responsible for nourishing the intervertebral disc. Spinal decompression treatment has been documented to have a very high success rate in treating neck and/or lower back pain. So if you are one of the millions of Americans that suffers for neck or lower back pain you owe it to yourself to find out more about this amazing new technology, Spinal Decompression.
