June 30 to July 22, 2006 Faculty Development Seminar to Cameroon and Nigeria, Summer 2006 University System Africa Council (USAC) APPLICATION DEADLINE: December 15th, 2005
Seminar Description: The seminar will expose participants to systems transitions in Cameroon and Nigeria. Emphasis is on politics, culture, education, science and technology, and environmental issues. Participants will observe the convergence and sometimes divergence in how traditional institutions and instruments of the modern state respond to the challenges of governance. The program will combine seminar presentations at three universities (the University of Abuja in Nigeria and the Universities of Yaoundé and Buea in Cameroon) and the American cultural centers in Yaoundé, Cameroon, and Abuja, Nigeria with visits to pertinent governmental and non-governmental agencies. Tentative seminar topics include: • “Traditional Government and the Modern State: The Duality of African Political Systems” • “African Perspectives on the United States as a Superpower and its Policy of Expansion of Democracy Globally” • “Adapting Technologies to Domestic Needs: Challenges and Prospects” • “Indigenous African Cultures in the Age of Globalization” • “Management of Distance Education in Nigerian Universities: Achievements, Problems and Prospects” • “Environmentalism and Development: Challenges and Prospects” • “Gender and Equity in Development” Seminar Size: USAC anticipates the participation of 15 USG faculty members. Who Can Participate? Full-time faculty members at any of the 34 institutions of the University of Georgia System are eligible to apply. Junior faculty members with little or no previous experience in Africa are encouraged to apply. Faculty must meet the following conditions: a. Complete and submit an application form; b. Submit a note from their physician stating they are in good health and are fit to travel; c. Attend the pre-seminar orientation; d. Attend the post-seminar evaluation session. Expectation of Seminar Participants: Participants are expected to participate fully in the program and attend all lectures, group tours and other events.
Estimated Program Cost: $3,979
Package price includes roundtrip transportation from Atlanta, most meals, lectures, scheduled group tours in Nigeria and Cameroon, lodging, and roundtrip airline travel between Nigeria and Cameroon. It does not include transportation within Georgia to and from Atlanta, passport and visa expenses, and other costs not enumerated above.

Qualification for Chancellor’s Award
Successful seminar applicants may qualify for a Chancellor’s Award of up to $1,500.00. To qualify for a Chancellor’s Award for this seminar, faculty must: a. Meet all eligibility requirements and conditions indicated above under the item “Who Can Participate?”; b. Not have been a previous recipient of a Chancellor’s Award; c. Be committed to present a paper on their seminar experience at the next Georgia Consortium Teaching Symposium to be held on March 15th-16th, 2007; d. Applicants may also apply for the University System of Georgia Certificate in Africa Studies Project (CIASP) travel grants of up to $2,000. CIASP travel grant applications at www.uga.edu/ciaspgrant. Chancellor’s Awards A limited number of Chancellor’s Awards are available to assist recipients in covering the cost of the seminar. Faculty who teach in the core and who have little international experience are given priority for these awards. This seminar application and essay will also serve as the fellowship application. The specification in the essay of how applicants intend to use their participation to develop curriculum/proposals/projects/activities/scholarly endeavors that would enhance the study of Africa on their campus will be especially important in determining recipients of Chancellor’s Awards.
