Linguistic indicators of Tenor written language differ from spoken
language tenor relates to the roles and relationships of those involved in
the communication.
How can we analysis the indicators of tenor , what is relative social status
equality or inequality in spoken how writer or speaker reveals her/his
persona power or authority. We will discuses these questions through
these novels below

Pride and Prejudice
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good
fortune must be in want of wife.
However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering
a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families,
that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.
My dear Mr. Bennet, said his lady to him one day, have you heard that Netherfeild
Park is let at last
Mr. Bennet replied that he had not.
But it is returned she for Mrs. Long has just been here, and she told me all about it.
Mr. Bennet made no answer.
Do not you want to know who has taken it cried his wife impatiently.
You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it.
This was invitation enough.
Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs. Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young
man of large fortune from the north of England, that he came down on Monday in a
chaise and four to see the place, and was so much delighted with it that he agreed with
Mr. Morris immediately that he is to take possession before Michaelmas and some of
his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week.

In the first paragraph we can see the writer present him self in the role of information
provider. Who have a knowledge of a society , which describing a real happening in
that society, there is no relationship between the writer and the reader, the writer used
formal language, from this point, we can see it’s a written , non interactive, single
participant.
In the second paragraph we can see another type it is a spoken language, it is a
conversation face to face between wife and husband. The lady of Mr. Bennet asked
him some of information about Netherfield, she presents her self as information
seeker, Mr Bennet replied that he had not. So, the lady seems to be more dominant of
the conversation and Mr. Bennet plays subordinate role, she asks questions and
offered feedback. The speakers of their language suggest they are on familiar and this
familiarity indicated by their using informal language like colloquial and slang
vocabulary and vague expressions for example (four or five thousands a year )this
sentence is not understood , what she did mean its not clear

Jane Eyre
There was no possibility of taking a walk that day. We had been wandering , indeed ,
in the leafless shrubbery an hour in the morning, but since dinner (Mrs. Reed, when
there was no company, dined early ) the cold winter wind had brought with it clouds
so somber, and a rain so penetrating , that further outdoor exercise was now out of the
question .

I was glad of it ; I never liked long walks , especially on chilly afternoons dreadful
tome was the coming home in the raw twilight, with nipped fingers and toes, and a
heart saddened by the chidings of Bessie, the nurse , and humbled by the
consciousness of my physical inferiority to Eliza , John, and Georgina Reed.

The said Eliza , John, and Georgina were now clustered round their mama in the
drawing room she lay reclined on a sofa by the fireside , and with her darling about
her ( for the time neither quarrelling nor crying) looked perfectly happy. Me, she had
dispensed from joining the group saying She regretted to be under the necessity of
keeping me at a distance but that until she heard from Bessie, and could discover by
her own observation that I was endeavoring in good earnest to acquire a more sociable
and child like disposition, a more attractive and sprightly manner, something lighter,
franker, more natural as it were she really must exclude me from privileges intended
only for contented, happy, little children.

In this novel we can see a first person talking us through the text using personal
pronouns such as we, me, and second person She, which the author's presence is
directly acknowledge, the writer adopted a manner to present himself as on quite
familiar, the writer presents him self as less powerful and suppressed, the writer wants
to tell us about her previous life. In the third paragraph the writer used a simple
language like a spoken language for example (The said Eliza, John and Georgiana
were now clustered around their mama, . In the last paragraph we can see a spoken
language face to face

Great Expectation
You young dog said the man, licking his lips, what fat cheeks you ha got.
I believe they were fat, though I was at that time undersized for my tears and not strong.
Darn me if I couldn't eat em said the man , with a threatening shake of his head, and if I han`t
Half mind to`t . I earnestly expressed my hope that he wouldn't, and held tighter to the
tombstone on which he had put me partly, to keep myself upon it , partly to keep my self
from crying.
Now then, lookee here said the man Where's your mother
There sir said I
He started, made a short run, and stopped and looked over his shoulder.
There sir I timidly explained. Also Georgiana. That's my mother.
Oh said he, coming back. And is that your father a longer your mother
Yes sir said I him too, late of this parish.
Ha he muttered then, considering. Who d`ye live with supposing you're kindly let to live.
Which I han`t made up my mind about
My sister, Sir Mrs. Joe Georgery wife of Joe Georgey, the blacksmith, sir
Blacksmith eh said he and looked down at his leg.
After darkly looking at his leg and at me several times, he came closer to my tombstone, took
my by both arms, and titled me back as far as he could hold me so that his eyes looked most
powerfully down into mine and mine looked most helplessly up into his.
Now lookee here he said the question being whther you're to be let to live . You know what
faille is
Yes sir
And you know what witless is
Yes sir
After each question he titled me over a little more, so as to give me a greater sense of
helplessness and danger.

It is a spoken language face to face , we can find some aspects of spoken in this text
for example , you young dog, what fat cheeks you ha got, darn me if I couldn't eat em
said the man , Black smith eh . The man asks the young, and the young answers him
the man seems to be a seeker information, and the young is the provider of the
information, the participant is less known to each other, the man in the dominant role
and the boy in subordinate role, the man controlled behavior of the young , he
controls the conversation, the man demonstrated the the power to commend the boy .
