Our policy is to recruit and employ our employees on the basis of their suitability for the work to be done.

Overall purpose of he job:

                  To drive the development and delivery of target-led face-to-face membership
                   recruitment for the RSPB within London.

                  To build and nurture a strong volunteer network to assist with delivery of the
                   RSPB’s face-to-face people engagement work.

                  To help position the RSPB as the organisation to support to fulfil peoples’
                   enthusiasm for birds, other wildlife and conservation.

                  To provide volunteer management expertise within the London team and oversee
                   appropriate delivery of the RSPB's Volunteering Development Strategy within
                   London.

Main Duties:



    1. Manage and support a team of passionate staff and volunteers in the delivery of people
       engagement objectives in London. Recruit new team members as required.

    2. Oversee an annual programme of events and activities to meet the RSPB’s people
       engagement objectives in London.

    3. Play a major role in the delivery of a long-term regional strategy for membership
       recruitment, volunteering and people engagement.

    4. Monitor, evaluate and report on the effectiveness of membership recruitment and
       volunteering activities within London.

    5. Enhance and support the capacity within the London team to identify, create and sustain
       volunteering and community action opportunities related to priorities within London.

    6. Prepare and monitor budgets linked to membership recruitment targets, ensuring an
       excellent return on investment.

    7. Provide advice and support to other London team members on running face-to-face
       activities.

    8. Ensure all relevant staff and volunteers understand the need to deliver activities that are
       ‚on-brand‛ and in-line with RSPB standards.

    9. Working with the London Communications Manager, identify opportunities to promote
       activities through the web, Birds magazine and the media. Give media interviews as
       required.

    10. Manage and support the Local Groups Officer and two Senior Events Officers.

    11. Provide advice on effective management and support of volunteers to the other London
        Team members and to ensure that the RSPB's Volunteering Policy is implemented.

    12. Oversee a comprehensive induction and training process for volunteers supporting the
        London team’s face-to-face engagement work.

    13. Attend Volunteering Development Seminars (co-ordinating attendance with the Local
        Groups Officer).

    14. Ensure appropriate resources are available and deployed for use by staff and volunteers at
        events.

    15. Keep abreast of best practice in face-to-face communication and volunteer management.



Other Duties:

    1. Work closely with other project staff and assist with a variety of project work including
       attendance at events, dealing with general enquiries and membership recruitment.

    2. To fully participate in the work of the South East regional team and contribute to other
       priority regional activities as required by the London Manager.

    3. To sit on the London Management Team, co-ordinating and developing the wider team’s
       work programmes, ensuring that there is a clear understanding of the RSPB’s priorities and
       direction of travel by each member of the team.

    4. To develop strong links with the ‘Membership and Events Development Manager’ and the
       South East Region’s wider Marketing Team based in Brighton.

    5. To build strong links with the Volunteering Development Department at UK Headquarters
       and the Volunteering Development Officer in the South East Region. To help create a
       shared vision for volunteering management and development in London and the region.

    6. To build strong links with the membership recruitment and people engagement
       departments at UK Headquarters

    7. To contribute to and attend relevant RSPB events, workshops, seminars and training
       courses.

    8. To report on progress and prepare written reports.



We expect you to carry out your job responsibilities in an environmentally aware manner,
ensuring as little damage to the environment as possible. Our aim is to ensure all resources are
utilised effectively and efficiently. You will be expected to apply ‘sound value for money’

In the RSPB volunteers are a major resource and make a vital contribution to the RSPB’s aim to
take action for the conservation of wild birds and the environment. You will be expected to
encourage, develop and support volunteer involvement in our work.



Other relevant factors of the job
The job will require travel throughout London, the region and the UK to attend events, visit
reserves and attend meetings. The post will involve working occasional unsociable hours,
including weekends, for which time off in lieu will be given.
