							                 Exporting References into Refworks
                                A Simple Guide for Life Science Databases
   •     Some databases have a Direct Export to RefWorks option where RefWorks will open automatically. Other databases
         require that you open RefWorks individually. To open RefWorks: On the main HBLL site, click on Find Articles,
         then click on Databases A-Z, click on “R”, select RefWorks

Medline OR Agricola OR CINAHL (EBSCO)
   1.    Add Items to Folder
   2.    Go to “Folder has items” on the right hand side of the page and click on the “View Folder” link
   3.    Select each reference you would like to export.
   4.    Click on EXPORT (the icon with the paper and green arrow)
   5.    Select the Option for “Direct Export to Refworks”
   6.    (there is box that allows you to remove items from folder after saving, make sure you have this selected or not
         depending on what you would like to do)
   7.    Click SAVE (this action will bring a pop up window for Refworks and will prompt you to log in OR register if you
         are a new user)
   8.    Login to REFWORKS
   9.    Click on “View Last Imported” to see your citations.

Medline (PUBMED)
   1.    Check boxes to the left of results page to select articles
   2.    Select MEDLINE under the “DISPLAY” drop down menu (this action will put the citations in a “tagged format”
         that Refworks will be able to read.)
   3.    Then Select TEXT under the “Send To” drop down menu.
   4.    Highlight all of the text with your mouse and COPY (press control C or select Edit then copy)
   5.    Open Refworks and Log In
   6.    Once in Refworks, pull your mouse over the “References” button at the far top left of the page.
   7.    Select IMPORT
   8.    For the Import Filter/Data Source select NLM Pubmed
   9.    For Database Select Pubmed
   10.   Select a folder for the reference to be imported if you wish.
   11.   Select the Option for “Import Data from Following Text”
   12.   PASTE text in space provided.
   13.   Select IMPORT (This action should bring up a page that says “Import Completed”)
   14.   Click on “View Last Imported” to view your citation.

BIOSIS Previews (ISI)
   1.    Check boxes to the left of the results page to select articles to export
   2.    Click on the ADD TO MARKED LIST button at the top of your search results
   3.    Click on the MARKED LIST link under the “BIOSIS Previews” tab
   4.    Under “Step 2” make sure the second dropdown menu says OTHER REFERENCE SOFTWARE
   5.    Click SAVE TO FILE (this will prompt you to save…)
   6.    SAVE to Desktop OR anywhere for a temporary basis.
   7.    After saving, Open REFWORKS in a separate window and log in.
   8.    Once in Refworks, pull your mouse over the “References” button at the far top left of the page.
   9.    Select IMPORT
   10.   For the Import Filter/Data Source select ISI (Institute for Scientific Information)
   11.   For Database Select BIOSIS
   12.   Select a folder for the reference to be imported if you wish.
   13.   Select the Option for “Import Data from the Following Text File”
   14.   Click on BROWSE and find and select the SAVED article (on desktop) from step #4.
   15.   Select IMPORT
    16. Click on “View Last Imported” to view your citation.


Web of Science (ISI)
    1.   Same as above EXCEPT
    2.   ON STEP #9 Select Web of Science for Database.

Zoological Record (ISI)
    1.   Save as above EXCEPT
    2.   ON STEP #9 Select Web of Knowledge for Database

CrossSearch (ISI) CrossSearch is a compilation of ISI databases.
    1.   Select articles (by placing check marks in the box adjacent to it)
    2.   Click on SUBMIT MARKS in the far right column
    3.   Click on View MARKED LIST to the far right column. It will be a blue link and underlined. (This action will take
         you to a list of multiple marked lists. One list for each different database.)
    4.   Click on VIEW MARKED RECORDS (you will only be able to this one database at a time.) On the next page it
         will say which marked list is currently being displayed at the top of the page i.e. Web of Science Marked Records.
    5.   Under Step 1 you may choose what options you would like to export to Refworks i,e. abstract, etc.
    6.   Under Step 2 click on EXPORT TO REFERENCE SOFTWARE
    7.   Follow the direction for that database as specified above.

CAB Direct- CAB Abstracts/ Global Health/ Nutrition & Food Science
    1.   Select articles on results page
    2.   At bottom right of page, select Refworks from drop down menu
    3.   Click on EXPORT
    4.   Log in to Refworks
    5.   Click on “View Last Imported” to view your citation.

Faculty of 1000 & BioMed Central
    1.   Select articles on results page
    2.   To the right of the “Send” button, select “selected articles” from the drop down menu
    3.   To the right of that drop down menu, select “Refworks” in the next drop down menu
    4.   Click on SEND
    5.   Log in to Refworks
    6.   Click on “View Last Imported” to view your citation

Cambridge Scientific/ Material Science
    1.   Select articles by clicking on the boxes to the left on results page
    2.   Click on the “Refworks” button at the top of the search results
    3.   Click on EXPORT to Refworks button
    4.   Log in to Refworks
    5.   Click on “View Last Imported” to view your citations.

Cochrane Library
    1.   Check boxes to the left of articles to select
    2.   Click on EXPORT SELECTED CITATIONS at the bottom left of the results page
    3.   Under the drop down menu for Export type, select either ‘Citation’ or ‘Citation and Abstract’ depending on if you
         would like to include the abstract or not in Refworks.
    4.   Under the drop down menu for File type, select PC, Macintosh, or Unix/Linux.
    5.   A pop up window will ask you “Do you want to open or save this file?”
    6.   SAVE to Desktop OR anywhere for a temporary basis.
    7.   After saving, Open REFWORKS in a separate window and log in.
   8.    Once in Refworks, pull your mouse over the “References” button at the far top left of the page.
   9.    Select IMPORT
   10.   For the Import Filter/Data Source select WILEY INTERSCIENCE
   11.   For Database Select WILEY INTERSCIENCE
   12.   Select a folder for the reference to be imported if you wish.
   13.   Select the Option for “Import Data from the Following Text File”
   14.   Click on BROWSE and find and select the SAVED article (on desktop) from step #6.
   15.   Select IMPORT
   16.   Click on “View Last Imported” to view your citation.

Google Scholar
   1.    Go to Google Scholar
   2.    click on the Scholar Preferences to the right of the Scholar search box
   3.    Scroll to the bottom of the Scholar Preferences page
   4.    In the “Bibliography Manager” section, select the button next to “Show link to import citations into”
   5.    Choose the REFWORKS citation manager from the drop down list of citation managers.
   6.    Click on “Save Preferences” button.
   7.    A new link next to each result will allow you to export to Refworks

SciFinder Scholar
   1. Click in the box to the left of desired citations.
   2. Click on Save As (located on the navigation bar).
   3. Select the C: drive and find a folder on your C: drive to save to.
   4. Select Tagged Format (*.txt) from the Save as type drop-down menu.
   5. Click Save (sample .txt file)
   In RefWorks
   1. Login to your RefWorks database if you have not already done so.
   2. Click on References and Import at the top of the screen.
   3. Select CAS SciFinder from the Import Filter/Data Source drop down menu.
   4. Select Multiple Databases from the Database drop-down menu.
   5. At the Import Data from the following Text File box click on the Browse button to select the file name of your
       saved records.
   6. Click on Import.
   7. Your citation(s) will automatically be imported into the Last Imported Folder.
       You may view the records or move them to the folder of your choice.
