II. Project Overview and Expected Benefit

The ability to create and effectively present multi-media programs is an
important workplace skill for ISU graduates. This proposal will expand support
and continue software maintenance for a pool of 35 Dell laptop computers and a
pool of 60 Dell and Macintosh laptops currently being loaned to ISU students.
Both pools are CAC-funded from FY03, FY04 & FY05.
Academic Information Technologies and Instructional Technology Center
are submitting a combined proposal for FY 2006. These divisions are a part of
the Information Technology reorganization on campus, and will be part of a
single IT department beginning July 1, 2005.
The laptop loan programs operate in conjunction with the GSB/ITC Media
Equipment Pool and the AIT Media Lab. The availability of CAC laptops, AIT
Media Lab, and GSB/ITC media equipment enables ISU students to create and
edit digital images and create multimedia presentations, handout notes,
demonstrations, simulations, e-portfolio and classroom presentations.

This year’s proposal is to establish a Media Skills Mentor program to
expand the support for ISU students using the laptops and media equipment.
This program proposes to:

         • Hire 4 students per semester. Each student mentor would be
provided materials and instruction to have the following base-line
              skills:

o Create digital still or video images.
o Transfer the images to a CAC laptop.
o Manipulate the images with Premiere and Photoshop to
optimize them for use in presentations.
o Create PowerPoint presentations, import the images, do
                     basic transitions etc.
o Connect the CAC laptop to a video projector, portable or
installed classroom to make the presentation.
                   o Demonstrate good presentation skills.

Each student mentor would then be available to mentor other students
using CAC computers and GSB-funded media equipment to help them create
visuals and effectively use and display them. ITC would promote the mentors as
a service to students. It would be arranged as an appointment or series of
appointments between the mentor and the student using ITC and AIT resources
such as the digital media lab in Durham.

The ITC CAC laptops are available for distribution to all ISU students
through a reservation system that also serves the GSB/ITC media equipment.
The laptop computers can be borrowed for up to five working days before they
must be returned or renewed. Equipment is only available for loan during

IT Student Laptop Checkout 2 3/14/2005
regular ISU academic sessions and is restricted to currently enrolled ISU
students who present valid identification. The office hours for ITC Classroom
Technology Services are 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

AIT CAC Laptops are also available by first-come first-served reservation
to all ISU Students. The Dell and Macintosh laptop computers can be borrowed
for up to three working days before they must be returned. Equipment is only
available for loan during regular ISU academic sessions and is restricted to
currently enrolled ISU students who present valid identification. The office
hours for the AIT Solution Center are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through
Friday.

The ITC has successfully managed the checkout of GSB/ITC media
equipment for over thirty years and CAC Laptops for three years. In addition to a
pool of 35 laptops, the pool of GSB/ITC media equipment includes thirteen
portable multimedia projectors, over forty digital still cameras, and eight digital
video cameras. The ITC has a very low loss and damage rate and a high
circulation rate for digital media equipment.

The AIT Solution Center has been loaning laptops to students for three
years. During that time there has been minimal damage and loss of equipment.
The AIT laptop usage data for the 2004 calendar year is 3,771 checkouts.

   III. Support and Maintenance

The support and materials for the training, scheduling and supervision of
the Mentors Initiative will be provided by ITC staff.
The ITC and AIT distribute, store and maintain the laptops within their
equipment storage areas in Durham and Communications Building. The
circulation costs and inventory control for the computers is the responsibility of
the respective divisions.
The daily operational management provided by AIT and ITC involves
scheduling, storage, distribution, inventory and basic maintenance of the laptop
computers. The estimated value of AIT /ITC’s in-kind contribution for labor and
circulation costs is $100,000 per year for a ninety-five unit laptop loan program.
