                                                 THIS WEEK IN BISD

• Watauga Middle School’s choir concert begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18 in the auditorium.

• Richland High School’s art show is from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18 and 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Wednesday,
   May 19 in the third gym. There will be an awards ceremony from 6-6:30 p.m. on May 19.

• Major Cheney Elementary at South Birdville will have their ASPIRE showcase night from 6-7:30 p.m. on
   Wednesday, May 19. There will be stage performances in the cafeteria and arts and crafts in the library.

• Watauga Middle School’s Coffee Talk for parents of 2010-11 sixth-grade students begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May
   20 in the cafeteria.

• Smith Elementary is having a showcase from 3:15-5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 20 to highlight programs from this
   year’s ASPIRE program.

• Watauga Middle School’s band concert begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 20 in the auditorium.

• Green Valley Elementary’s celebration dinner begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 20.

• Stowe Elementary’s end-of-year ASPIRE showcase is from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 20 in the cafeteria.
   Students will perform, display and show off what they learned this spring.

• Green Valley Elementary’s Gator Greats Breakfast celebrating outstanding citizens begins at 7:30 a.m. on Friday,
   May 21 in the library.

• Porter Elementary’s third-grade field trip is Friday, May 21.

• Smithfield Elementary’s Field Day is Friday, May 21. Parents are encouraged to come watch their children partici-
   pate in different outdoor activities and share a sack lunch. District approved volunteers are needed. Parents can con-
   tact their child’s teacher for information.

• Mullendore Elementary’s awards assemblies are Friday, May 21. Kindergarten through second grade is from 8:30-
   9:30 a.m. and third through fifth grade is 1:30-2:30 p.m.

• Major Cheney Elementary at South Birdville’s variety show begins at 1:20 p.m. on Friday, May 21.

• Green Valley Elementary’s Valley Voices Choir will compete at the choir festival held at NRH2O on Friday, May 21.

• North Ridge Middle School’s eighth grade awards assembly is from 8:30-10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 21 in the gym.

• Birdville High School’s leadership team (HULK) is having a canned food drive from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday,
   May 22 in the west parking lot at the school and at the Kroger Signature store on Boulevard 26. The food drive is
   for a group called “No Need for Need.” For information, call Nathan Prange at 817.547.8246.

• Major Cheney Elementary at South Birdville’s Stacking/Tracking Day is May 24. For information, call
   817.547.2300.

• Smithfield Elementary’s TAKS Carnival is May 25. Third grade will be from 8:30-10:30 a.m., fourth grade from
   9:30-11:30 a.m., and fifth grade from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. For information, call 817.547.2100.

• Birdville Elementary’s ASPIRE program will have an end-of-year showcase from 5-6 p.m. on May 26. Parents
   and students that participated in the program will come for a night of entertainment, meet the community partners
   and teachers, and see the different projects students have done through the year. Students and parents will receive
   certificates and refreshments will be served.

• Mullendore Elementary’s Field Day is May 26.

• Porter Elementary’s fifth-grade graduation begins at 9 a.m. on May 27.

• Haltom High School’s theater department is having summer camp June 7-9 for children ages 2-16. Programs
   include: Pirate Adventures, ages 2-6; Acting, Stage Make-up and Stage Combat ages 7-14; and Musical Theater

• Young authors at North Oaks Middle School recently wrote and published “Locker Letters.” The premise of the
   book is a girl named E.D. from North Elm High School comes home to her empty trailer and finds a letter from
   her mother saying she has to leave quickly and can’t explain but to just lay low until she gets back. The young
   authors will be doing a book signing at 2 p.m. on May 22 at Barnes and Noble at North East Mall. For informa-

• Richland High School’s Baccalaureate will begin at 2 p.m. on May 23 at Richland High School.
• Haltom High School’s Baccalaureate will begin at 1:30 p.m. on May 23 at Haltom High School.

• Birdville High School’s Baccalaureate will begin at 2 p.m. on May 23 at First Baptist Church Colleyville.

• BISD students will attend school for half-day on Thursday, May 27 and Friday, May 28 for semester testing.
   Elementary students will be released at 11 a.m. and secondary students as 11:30 a.m. Prekindergarten AM classes
   attend 8-9:15 a.m. and PM classes attend 9:45-11 a.m. PPCD (three- and four-year-olds) will combine and attend
   8-11 a.m.

• Smithfield Elementary’s end-of-year class parties are May 27.

• Green Valley Elementary’s fifth grade end-of-year celebration begins at 9 a.m. on May 27 in the cafeteria. For

• Holiday Heights Elementary’s fifth grade awards ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. on May 27 in the cafeteria.

• Birdville High School’s Graduation Ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. on May 30 at the Fort Worth Convention

• Haltom High School’s Graduation Ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. on May 30 at the Fort Worth Convention

• Richland High School’s Graduation Ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. on May 30 at the Fort Worth Convention

• BISD presents Superintendent Stephen “Stevie Ray” Waddell and Old Skool at 7 p.m. on June 1 at the NRH2O
   Concert Field. The NRH2O Concert Field is located outside the water park next to the parking lot. Admission is
   free. However, donations are accepted. All proceeds benefit the All-Birdville Marching Band Tournament of
   Roses Parade Trip. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs. In case of rain or wet grounds, the concert will be
   moved to the parking lot at the Fine Arts/Athletics Complex.

• North Oaks Middle School is sponsoring free ASPIRE programming Monday through Thursday from 10:40 a.m.
   – 2:40 p.m. June 7 - July 2. Programs include: breakdancing, computers 101, hip hop dance, movie critics, run-
   ning, sign language, soccer, space history/robots, study island, volleyball, and weight training. Students from
   Haltom and Watauga middle schools are eligible to attend these programs as well.

• Richland High School’s golf camp is from 9-11 a.m. either June 28 - July 1 or July 12-15 for fourth grade
   through incoming freshman, and 9-11 a.m. Aug. 2-5 for second- through sixth-grade students. The cost is $100

• Congratulations to Dario Scalco, Birdville High School senior, for winning first place in Database Applications at
   the Business Professionals of America (BPA) national competition in Anaheim, CA. Jan Haynie is his BPA advi-
   sor.

• Congratulations to Kerry Thompson, Haltom High School, for winning the UIL Regional Boys High Jump
   Championship with a jump of 6’8”. Also, congratulations to Ashley Flores for finishing second in the girls two
   mile run at the UIL Regional Track Championships. Both athletes will compete at the UIL State Track Meet.

• Congratulations to Birdville High School’s world language students Betsy Quetz and Jonathan Esparza, seniors,
   and Alfonso Arreguín and Mariana Valle, sophomores, for attaining national recognition for excellent perform-
   ance on the 2010 National Spanish examinations. This is the second year BHS students have taken the National
   Spanish Examinations.
• BISD is accepting online applications for parent/community volunteers for the 2010-11 school year. New and
   returning volunteers can enter their application online at http://www.birdvilleschools.net/cf/volunteer/index.cfm.

• BISD started an employee recognition program called “A Touch of Class.” This program is an opportunity for stu-
   dents, staff, parents and community members to recognize employees for the extra-ordinary things they do for chil-

• Birdville ISD and JPS have joined together to provide two school based clinics in the district. One is in Haltom
   City at 2807 Layton Ave. in Haltom City, and the other is on the south side of the Academy at C.F. Thomas at
   8200 O’Brian Way in North Richland Hills. The clinic treats students in BISD and their sibling’s ages newborn to
   18-years-old for a $5 office charge. Services include: well child visits, sports physicals, acute care, chronic ill-
   nesses (asthma, diabetes), immunizations, and much more. The clinic does not have X-ray capabilities or dental
   services. They see uninsured students or Medicaid that do not have a specified primary care physician. For
