Introduction

Thoughts:

 Your life is a Journey…
o What makes it a good trip or a bad one?
o What do you want out of your journey?

 Many today, though they seem successful and squared away they are still searching
     for key things in life:
o Answers to their purpose for being here…
         o Fulfillment in their life
 We didn’t choose to be born
 We don’t choose our death
 The only part we can really choose is how we will live our life

 What Kind of a Journey will we take?
o First off…God put you one this journey of life…we have a divine
           appointment…thus purpose for life
o Second…we are never alone…God wants to join you on this journey to offer
           you security
o Third…it may be a new path for some of you…this is a faith journey…a
           journey where God provides

 Illustration: I’ve heard it said…If you do the same things, the same way,
you get the same results. Don’t look for a new journey without going down a
             new path.

We must be ready to take this challenge and go in new directions in order to get
         the desired results.

I. Learning to Understand Yourself through God

A quote from Billy Graham explains things so well:

“You never understand who you are until you understand who God is”

Let’s take the time to get to understand him, that we might understand ourselves
         and our relationship to Him.
o God is the Great Designer of Life
o God put you here…there are no mistakes with God
o God has a plan for your life

 God is the Great Designer of Life

Illustration: Billy Graham went to Russia some years ago to Siberia and was
debated by an Anthropologist there. This man was an evolutionist and an atheist.
BG asked him if he’d ever found a tribe or any group of people on the earth that
did not believe in God or some higher power. This man pondered the thought a
                                                                                      2

moment then had to say…Every group that has ever left evidence of their
existence has left their belief in a God or higher power.

 There is a God shaped void in every person’s life.

 God has shown himself by nature: These are his footprints

Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are
clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal
power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Rom 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God,
neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish
    heart was darkened.

 He speaks to us…how?
       o Through the Bible…His Word
       o Through Jesus…the Word

Heb 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto
    the fathers by the prophets,
Heb 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath
    appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
Heb 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his
person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by
    himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
    Word was God.
Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made
    that was made.
Joh 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his
glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

 Through the Holy Spirit…our comforter

Joh 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter,
    that he may abide with you for ever;
Joh 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it
seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you,
    and shall be in you.

OK…God speaks to us through the Bible, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit but let’s ask
the next question? He wants to communicate with you.

What is God like? Let’s list some of His attributes then talk about them:
               He’s a spirit
 He’s a person in that he has a personality
 He is holy, righteous, and pure
               He is love
                                                                                         3

 He is all powerful, all present, and all knowing

 He’s a spirit

Joh 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in
            spirit and in truth.

o A spirit has no flesh or bones

Luk 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me,
and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

o A spirit isn’t limited to time or space

o A spirit isn’t limited to the power of a body…he’s infinite and infinitely
            powerful

 He’s a person…in that he has personality
       o He feels
       o He thinks
       o He desires
       o He decides
       o He loves
       o He builds relationships
       o He acts
       o He hopes
       o He judges
o There are some vast differences between God and man:
                God is Omnipotent…all powerful
                God is Omnipresent…present everywhere
                God is Omniscient…all knowing
                God is perfect
 He’s not motivated by selfish reasons
 He’s not affected by a sin nature

 God is holy, righteous, and pure

Hab 1:13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on
            iniquity:
1Jo 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare
unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Isa 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the
LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

 Only when we understand the holiness of God will we understand the
                depth of our own sin.
 God is perfect but we are not
                   o All have sinned
                   o We come short
                                                                                            4

                        o We miss the mark

 Illustrate that by a Bible example: Leprosy was put out of the
camp…separated from others because it was communicable
o God used that as a picture of sin
                        o Outside of the camp
                        o Separated from God
o That reality is what draws us here today.
 Our old nature and old path on the journey has separated us from
God. God wants to reunite us…let’s proceed.

       God is Love

1Jo 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
1Jo 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that
God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through
                him.

 It was his love for us that caused him to create man
 It was his love for us that caused him to create the beauty of the earth.
 It was his love that desired to have his fallen creation
 It was his love that sent Jesus to die on the cross in our place

1Jo 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and
sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
                life.

 It is his love that is the unshakable commitment that seeks what’s best
                    for us.
                         o Don’t sentimentalize love….it’s not warm fuzzes
o Love is action…Proof God so loved the world was the sending
of his son to redeem or buy us back
o Love is commitment…salvation and a relationship with God is
not based on your works but the works of Jesus on the cross.

Joh 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that
cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

It’s God’s love for us that provides a way to know him and have a relationship
with Him. Let’s talk about the:

II. The Great Desire…To Be Reconciled to God

 You were created to know God and to be his friend forever
 We were not made for ourselves…we were made for God
 Many say why am I so restless…because you live for yourself
                                                                                             5

 Why do I feel so incomplete…because you haven’t invited Jesus into
                   your life.
 Why am I so empty…because Jesus is the living water and the bread of
                   life that satisfies spiritual hunger
 Why do I wonder around without a course…because Jesus is the
                   compass of life
 Truth is … We are incomplete without God
 We are spiritual beings created in the image of God.

Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God
created he him; male and female created he them.

 We have a body, Soul, and Spirit

1Th 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God
your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the
coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

o We feed the body with its needs…the house we live in.
o We look for things to satisfy the soul,(the mind, will, intellect, and emotion)
           with self helps
o We often neglect the spiritual part of man
o We were set apart from all of God’s creation because God has given us a soul
and spirit…the part that reasons and has a relationship with the creator.
o We were created out of love
               Created in his image
 Created a paradise for man to live
 Came daily to visit with his creation one on one
 Love on a human level must be shared or expressed…God created
Adam and Eve to share and express his love with man.

Man’s Unending Search

 Tragically most people never discover these truths…and never get on
God’s path in the journey of life.

Billy Graham related the story of one of the richest men in the
world…One day BG received an invitation to lunch with this man. As they
sat at lunch this man then 75 began to cry. He told the story of riches,
possessions, and power but inside he was miserable and empty.

 This story is repeated over and over again in life…we go down a road to
success but things don’t satisfy the soul and spirit of man.

Think about it…the God of the Universe wants to forgive all your wrong turns in
life…all the bad decisions…all your sins and have a relationship with you…and he
won’t turn you down…won’t you come to him by faith?

Let me share this good news:
                                                                                        6

Salvation is a gift from God

 God wants us to know Him as personal Savior. We do it by faith given by God
and his grace. Let me begin by saying God wants you to know for sure heaven
will be your home, look at I John 5:13:

 1Jo 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the
Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may
believe on the name of the Son of God.
 This verse tells us we can know for sure heaven will be our home…

Let’s look next to Ephesians 2:8,9

 Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it
          is the gift of God:
 Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
 Notice Salvation is by God’s grace (Unmerited favor)
 We could do no good works that would earn salvation for us
 God gives it as a gift
 Our part is strictly faith…believing in God’s promise and provision

The scriptures tell us that all men are sinners

 Rom 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
         Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
 Sin is not our daily wrong doing but the sin that is upon all men because
            of Adam’s sin
 Because of Sin we are separated from God
 There are no perfect people…all are sinners…and in need of a Savior.

The scriptures tell us there is a penalty for sin…that penalty is death
spiritual separation from God in a real place called Hell.

 Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life
          through Jesus Christ our Lord.
 What we earn for sin is death but God wants to give us a gift paid for by
our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross
 He’s blood, the Bible says washes away all sin.

God knew that there was no other way for man to be saved because
His holiness demanded the death penalty. Jesus became our substitute
   and died in our place.

 Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet
          sinners, Christ died for us.

Faith is the key that unlocks the door to God’s free gift.
 Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the
sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
                                                                                      7

Now God says believe that Jesus:
      Is Lord and God
 And that He is risen bodily from the dead

       Then by faith:

 Call on the Lord asking him to forgive you of your sins and save you.
 Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt
believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be
           saved.
 Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with
the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
 Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be
           saved.
 If this is the desire of your heart then exercise your faith by praying this
prayer…believing it to the saving of your soul

Dear Heavenly Father…I know that I am a sinner. I want the blood of
Jesus to wash my sins away. The best way I know how, I repent of my
sins and give you my life, please come into my heart and save me.
   In Jesus name amen.

God promises to save you…he gives you his word he can’t lie.

Tit 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised
   before the world began;
