What is the difference between Adware, Spyware and Anti-virus protection?

Adware, spyware and computer virus share some similarities, one of which
is that all three are major nuisances for computer users. The differences
will be explained below.

Spyware is software that does not intentionally harm your computer. What
spyware does is that it creates pathways that enables other parties to
communicate with your computer. Spywares will normally track the various
types of web sites that you visit, this information is then utilised by
web advertisers to allow them to send you unwanted emails and pop-ups.

As a result, spyware is usually frowned upon and avoided. Spyware is more
intrusive compared to adware. Spyware can have their own separate
executable programs which enables them to record your keystrokes, scan
files on your hard disks and look at other applications that you use
including chat programs, cookies and Web browser settings. Please note
that spyware is not limited to these application alone.

The information that spyware records is then sent to the spyware author,
who will then use this information for advertising and marketing
purposes. The information can even be sold to advertisers and other

Adware, consists of advertising materials which are packaged into a
software or program & is automatically installed once this particular
program or software is added to your computer system. There are some
forms of adware, on the other hand, which download advertising content as
a particular application is being used. It's unfortunate that most adware
programs take the form of spywares, where they track and report user
information to program authors.

Spyware infections can represent as pop-up ads that are unrelated to the
site that you are currently viewing. Usually, spyware pop-ups contain
advertisements with adult content. Another sign of spyware infection is
when your computer system slows down, especially When the Windows desktop
takes a longer time to load, its best to scan your computer for any
possible spyware infections.

On the other hand, viruses are destructive to your computer. Viruses are
invented & created for one purpose only, and that is to wreck havoc to
your computer. They destroy whatever they come in contact with and will
duplicate itself to infect as many components of the computer's operating
system or network as possible.

Most current anti-virus software is able to also provide spyware and
adware scanning and removal utilities. However, there is software
available which will focus on mainly adware & spyware detection &
removal. Once the protective software scans & locates the adware, spyware
or virus, it then removes these agents as well as the various places that
their components may be located on your computer system. This is why it
is critical that the protective software you utilise has its program
continuously updated in "real time", as there is always new viruses,
spyware & adware created on the internet.
Firewall is another step to help improve your computer's defence system
against infection & protect your computer files. You should also block
pop-up ads to minimise your computer's exposure to damaging software.
