Essential Question : Should the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn be taught?

The book The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn is being challenged in your school district.
Currently the book is taught in all sophomore classes. However, a group of parents is insisting that
the book be taken off required reading lists and removed from the high school curriculum entirely.
The school committee has asked for a focus group of four people to examine the question and
present its findings. After research and careful consideration, you will present your opinion on
whether or not the book should be taught. In addition to planning your presentation, you should
also be prepared to answer questions from the committee.

Before you answer this essential question, you will be exploring four questions and
arguments on both sides, as well as some background information and slave narratives to enrich
your understanding of these arguments. In addition to examining the resources given in this
WebQuest, you will also need to carefully read the entire book in order to make a sound argument.
In your presentation, you will need to refer to examples from the text and to consider passages from
the book in context.

Read Chapters 1-15 before answering these questions. Use the website to
help you write a paragraph for each that may use illustrations. If you use
any, copy and paste the illustrator.
Question 1: Does the book promote racism?

Question 1.1: Is the portrayal of Jim racist?

Question 1.2: What is Huck and Jim’s relationship and how does it change?

Question 2: What do others think?

Question 3: What is the author’s purpose?

Question 4: Is this text important in treating the issues of slavery and racism?
