Millennium Elementary School School Improvement Plan 2005-
                             2006
                          11/27/2006
Overview:
Millennium Elementary School opened in the fall 2000, serving 527 kindergarten through sixth-
grade students. Our main building includes a library, computer lab, stage/music room, gym,
multipurpose room, commons/orchestra room, and twenty-two classrooms. A variety of
specialists enrich our core educational programs: Media Staff, General Music Specialist,
Integrated Program Staff, English Language Learner Staff, Counselor, Psychologist, Nurse,
Speech/Language Pathologist, and Physical/Occupational Therapist.

The framework for Millennium Elementary, based on effective school research practices, takes
its focus from a comprehensive plan for elementary schooling called “Basic School”. This plan
strengthens elementary education by bringing together the key components of an effective
school. The Basic School takes the incentive for school renewal back to the first years of formal
learning and gives priority to language as the core of essential knowledge and identifies
priorities that work.

The team members involved in developing the SIP included:

Impact on student
achievement:
Strategy: To emphasize literal and interpretive comprehension of informational text in our reading and
                          content area instruction.
Rationale: These areas have been identified as areas of weakness on our WASL scores (31% of students
have not met standard in the area of informational text comprehension and 20% have not met
standard in the area of analyze/interpret). Targeted interventions will be provided for African-
Americans having 60% not meeting standard. Recently exited ELL students will be closely
monitored for supplemental/modified support to meet their instructional needs in the classroom.
Improvement is anticipated as strategies and skills are taught and practiced.

SMART Goal: By Spring 2007, the percentage of Millennium students not meeting standard will be
reduced by 10%, as measured by the 4th Grade WASL Writing Assessment.

Strategy: To emphasize the traits of content / ideas and organization and conventions in our daily written
                          language instruction.
Rationale: These areas have been identified as areas of weakness on our WASL scores (35% of students
have not met standard in the area of content/organization/style and 25% have not met standard
for conventions). Based on the last administered KSD winter '04 six trait writing assessment
(49% earned a score below a three in ideas and 38% scored below a three in organization and
46% scored below in conventions). Targeted interventions will be provided for African-American
and Hispanic students having 80% not meeting standard. Targeted interventions will also be
provided to the 51% male students who did not meet standard. Improvement is anticipated as
                          concepts are taught and practiced.

Title I/ LAP Plan Component: Process to Identify Underachieving
Students to be served in LAP for Math

The Kent School District process for selecting students to receive LAP
support is to identify a targeted population of students.

At Millennium Elementary students in grades 1 through 6 were selected for
Math LAP support through the use of classroom based assessments, EDM
Unit tests, WASL scores and/or teacher judgment.

Students who showed the most need were served first.

                                        2006/07

At our school we believe that parent involvement is essential to our students’ academic
achievement and future success. Our parent involvement policy was developed in
partnership with parents and school staff to better serve the needs of our students. This
policy will be evaluated annually to assure it is timely and effective.

   • At our annual Welcome Back Celebration school information, including Title 1,
Part A requirements, will be shared with parents. Parents who cannot attend will
be notified of meetings at other times to receive this information.

   • Parents will be invited to participate in our parent policy planning, review and
evaluation as part of our ongoing school improvement process and plan.

   • During the school year we will keep parents informed of our Title 1, Part A
program including curriculum, assessment, and achievement levels expected,
through our publications, conferences, and our website.

   • Parents may meet with staff members to give input and assist in making decisions
regarding their child’s education. Parents may call, email or write to the school
office, teacher, or other staff to set meetings.

   • Our school staff will be available and will respond to parents through meetings, in
two way communication, such as phone calls, and email, and through written
formats. If needed, interpreters, and/ or translations will be made available.

   • Our school/ home compact will be written and evaluated with parent assistance
yearly as part of our school improvement planning process. Parents will receive
the compact annually and families new to Millennium will receive a copy through
       the Welcome Room.

   • We will provide activities and events to involve parents in their child’s academic
growth, such as TIPS nights, literacy events, and parent education opportunities.
