Large-Format Printers & Scanners
General Printing Information
The Advanced Output Center offers two options for low-cost and quick self-serve printing. Our large-format printers are
great for presentations and quick visualizations where large prints are needed. Letter and ledger-sized printing are also
available on the CRIT hallway copiers in both black-and-white and color on Bond paper. If you are looking for archival
prints or printing on other media, please visit the Service Bureau, located in 1109 Sharp. These instructions are for the
following printers:

Download and Install Mac OSX Drivers
Drivers must be installed on your laptop in order to print to any of the AOC printers. Mac drivers for the printers listed
above are included in the General Access Printer installer, which is available online. PC drivers are not available.

    Download The Drivers
       • Open your browser and navigate to: http://crit.artic.edu/printing/
       • Click on the link to General Access Printer Installer at the top of the page.
       • The file should begin downloading. Depending on your browser, you may be prompted for different
          options.

                                                                                    Firefox

                                                                                    Safari

          • Double click the downloaded disk image. This will mount the disk image, which will appear as a drive in
the sidebar of a Finder window. Double click the .pkg file to launch the installer.

          • You will be prompted through the installation. At the ‘Select a Destination’ prompt, choose to install to the
‘Macintosh HD’ volume. Finish the installation, then restart your computer.
          • If you open Applications/Utilities/Printer Setup Utility, you will see the list of printer drivers that have just
been installed: one for the Toshiba printer/copier, and one each for Vellum and Bond papers on each of
               the Large-Format printers.

Document Preparation and Printing
Programs differ slightly in terms of print preparation and color processing. The following instructions are general
guidelines, and particular programs may vary. If you have questions about a specific program, please check the
manual or help file for printing specifics.

The Océ color printer attempts to match on-screen colors by making automatic adjustments. It is recommended that in-
program color management be assigned to the post-script printer.

          Print Resolution
TIFF, JPEG, PSD, Raster Resolution for PC or Mac Must be Less than 150 pixels/inch

          PDF Optimization
Use Acrobat's Preflight batch processor to automatically check for PDF errors and downsample images to
appropriate resolutions to drastically reduce printing times. Preflight works the same in Windows or Mac OS.

           • Select a paper size from the dropdown list.

                  o Large-format color printer ‘Quality’
option can be set to either ‘Check,’
                     ‘Release,’ or ‘Presentation.
‘Presentation’ is the default for Bond
paper; this looks the best on Bond,
however Release is the default for
                     vellum, since printing in Presentation
mode on Vellum can often lead to ink
                     smearing.
o For the large-format black and white
                     printer, the ‘Printer Features’ offers
                     ‘Quality' options of ‘Standard,’ ‘Line
                     Text,’ and ‘Poster Mode.’ ‘Poster
Mode’ is better for images, while ‘Line
Text’ is better for lines and text.
                     'Standard' is somewhere in between.

Scanning from the Oce TCS 500 large-format scanner
The Oce TCS 500 scanner can scan most flat paper documents, including charcoal, pastel and pencil drawings.
Nothing abrasive or wet should ever be put through the scanner. For questions about specific materials, please
   contact an AOC staff member.

         • Check in with an AOC employee. The employee will unlock the machine’s controls, and keep your ID card
while the scanner is in use. There is no charge to use the scanner.
         • Orient your document so that it is facing down. It is recommended to scan in landscape orientation (with
the long side of the document feeding into the scanner) whenever possible.
         • Line up the right edge of the document with the right end of the scanner’s ruler. Carefully slide the
document into the scanner. The scanner will gently grab your document and automatically measure its
width. A custom width can be entered later if needed.
         • Use the scroll wheel on the right of the control panel to select the preset scan quality of your choice (For
              example, ‘Color PDF 200 dpi’)
         • Press the ‘Select’ button located above the scroll wheel if you want to adjust any of the scan settings; the
format can be changed from PDF to TIFF, compression settings can be adjusted, cropping, width and
brightness can also be adjusted here.
         • Push the big green button. The print will be drawn into the scanner, and then rolled back out the front. Hit
the red button to remove the document from the rollers.
         • Scanned files are stored on the AOC’s scan server. Scans cannot be sent directly to any printer, however
once the files have been retrieved from the scan server, they can be formatted or printed just as any other
              image file.
         • After scanning, the file can be retrieved from the scan server from any Mac in the Sullivan building that is
              plugged into the network.
