Safety Net Counseling Groups
Lowery Freshman Center 2009-2010
Dear Parent/Guardian: Date: ______/_______/______
The Allen Independent School District in collaboration with Child and Family Guidance Center (CFGC) has
implemented a Curriculum-Based Support Group (CBSG) at the Lowery Freshman Center. These groups will
provide students the opportunity to discuss problems and concerns in a supportive environment, while
gaining valuable information and skills. Some of the topics that will be addressed will include self-esteem,
communication, anger management, conflict resolution, coping skills/problem solving, and the risk of drug and
Groups will be held at Lowery, during school hours. Students will receive an excused absence for the class they
miss, but will be responsible for all work missed. If your student is taking a test or working on a project with a
deadline, they will be encouraged NOT to participate in group for the day and make the group day up later
within the school year. There is no fee for this program. A brief description of the Curriculum-Based Support
Group is on the other side of this form.
The support groups will be conducted by a Safety Net Counselor who is employed by Child & Family Guidance
Center of Plano. Since all counseling is based on a trusting relationship between counselor and student,
information shared by group members is kept confidential, except in certain situations in which there is an
ethical responsibility to limit confidentiality. If a student reveals information about hurting himself/herself or
another person, the proper steps will be taken to ensure the safety of all involved.
Because this program is optional, your permission is required to allow your student to participate in the
support group at any time during the school year. The program is scheduled to begin a few weeks after the
school year has begun. These groups are on a first-come, first-serve basis, so it is important to get your form
signed and turned in as soon as possible. If you want to allow your student to participate in this free, voluntary
program, please complete the blanks below and return the form as soon as possible to Mrs. Atencio. For more
information, please feel free to contact me at 972.396.6975.
