The essence of designing for the developing world is no different from designing a consumer product. ASME is encouraging the involvement of engineers in areas throughout the world that are devoid of traditional engineering skills, where the need to improve infrastructure and basic services is high. The development of ASME's Engineering for Change initiative, featuring its Web-based infrastructure (www.engineeringforchange.org), spearheads the current portfolio of initiatives. In March, ASME convened an Engineering for the Developing World Summit in Washington, DC. Fortunately, the work of engineers -- and of ASME -- has begun, and the fruits of the work are being felt.
