Assessing the Social Influence of Documents [ ] [ Post Followup ] [ Discussion Forums ] [ Discussion Index ] Posted by Yogesh Malhotra on June 21, 1998 at 14:10:42: In Reply to: Yes, but is it art? posted by Martyn R Jones on June 19, 1998 at 19:34:10: Thank you for your insightful contribution for extending the dialog. Attempting to hit the bullets, could one think of documents as information artifacts that: • may represent reflections, hopes, and aspirations of representatives of social communities • may serve as catalysts in the creation of social coherence and action • may restrict 'shared meaning' within specific groups or social communities • may be used by power brokers to define the normative influences on others • may be used for controlling and influencing others by legitimization of myths • may be used by media for influencing the drift of opinion of the general populace • may or may not represent the most ideal way of sharing information and knowledge. Your point about the sharing of information across generations of a social community by means other than documents is well taken... we know about myths, legends and stories that are passed over generations of social and organizational cultures. Hence, the knowledge sharing capability _inherent in the document_ may be limited by the facility with which various producers, organizers and consumers of knowledge may translate tacit knowledge into bits, pixels and symbols and then decode these explicit artifacts for later consumption as knowledge. In the processes of creation, organization and consumption of knowledge, individuals' interpretations and imaginations may play a prominentrole in translation of knowledge into information and vice-versa. What is your view? What is the view of other participants in the dialog?
