Personal Writing Prompts related to The Scarlet Letter, Chapters 1 -10

Part One
Write freely for about 15 minutes in response to any one of the prompts below in Group A, and
also write freely for about 15 minutes in response to any one prompt in Group B. This is
personal writing, not to be shared with classmates. I will ask, however, to see that you have done
this assignment, and you will be returning this writing later.

Please type your responses. Do not worry about writing formally in any way here. Your goal
is to use language honestly and personally to describe and reflect on personal experience.

Group A

1. Describe a time you felt compelled to keep a secret when you didn’t really want to do it.

2. Describe a time you made an oath with someone.

3. Describe a time you felt most alone in a crowd.

4. Describe a time you felt terribly upset because of the way others treated you.

Group B
1. Describe a time you were attracted to or intrigued by someone very different from yourself.

2. Describe a moment when you secretly observed someone.

3. Describe a moment you refused help from someone.

4. Describe a time you felt physically ill because of worrying, a secret your were keeping, or something
that was bothering you.

5. Describe an experience you had when you really wanted to “confess” something to someone.

Part 2

Although you have only read excerpts from early chapters of Hawthorne’s novel, take a few
moments to review the excerpts you have read. (All excerpts are posted on our class calendar.)
Select a quotation (which may be just a single sentence or it may be as large as a paragraph)
which you find personally interesting or intriguing. Maybe it interests you because it reveals
something about a character or the plot, or maybe something about its style interests you.

First quote your passage and then explain your response to it. Your response should be at least
one full, typed paragraph.
