FORTUNE 500 COMPANY PROJECT MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL INC: RANK 208 in 2009 PROJECT BY: NAME: MALIK R. KHAN ROLL NO.: 72 S.Y.BBA SEM 4 DIV A MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL INC Marriott was founded by J. Willard Marriott 1927 when he and his wife opened a root beer stand in Washington D.C.. As a missionary in the sweltering, humid summers in Washington, Marriott was convinced that what the city needed was such a place to get a cool drink. They later expanded their enterprises into a chain of restaurants and hotels. Marriott hotel located at Tampa International Airport, taken from top level of parking garage The Key Bridge Marriott in Arlington, Virginia is Marriott International‘s longest operating hotel, and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009. Their son and current Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, J.W. (Bill) Marriott, Jr. has led the company to spectacular worldwide growth. Today, Marriott International has about 3,150 lodging properties located in the United States and 67 other countries and territories. Marriott International was formed in 1992 when Marriott Corporation split into two companies, Marriott International and Host Marriott Corporation. In 2002 Marriott International began a major restructuring by spinning off many Senior Living Services Communities (which is now part of Sunrise Senior Living) and Marriott Distribution Services, so that it could focus on hotel ownership and management. The changes were completed in 2003. Marriott International headquarters in the Bethesda area of unincorporated Montgomery County, Maryland, United States Singapore Marriott Hotel In April 1995, Marriott International acquired a 49% interest in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company LLC. Marriott International believed that it could increase sales and profit margins at the Ritz, a troubled chain with a significant number of properties either losing money or barely breaking even. The cost of Marriott's initial investment was estimated to be about $200 million in cash and assumed debt. The next year, Marriott spent $331 million to take over the Ritz-Carlton Atlanta and buy a majority interest in two properties owned by William Johnson, a real estate developer who had purchased theBoston Ritz Carlton in 1983 and expanded his Ritz holdings over the next twenty years. The Ritz began expansion into the lucrative timeshare market among other new initiatives made financially possible by the deep pockets of Marriott, which also lent its own in-house expertise in certain areas. There were other benefits for Ritz-Carlton flowing from its relationship with Marriott, such as being able to take advantage of the parent company's reservation system and buying power. The partnership was solidified in 1998 when Marriott boosted its interest in Ritz- Carlton to 99 percent. By 1999 revenues from the 35 hotels it operated around the world totaled about $1.4 billion. Marriott International owned Ramada International Hotels & Resorts until its sale on September 15, 2004 to Cendant. It is the first hotel chain to serve food that is completely free of trans fats at all of its North American properties. In 2005, Marriott International and Marriott Vacation Club International comprised two of the 53 entities that contributed the maximum of $250,000 to the second inauguration of President George W. Bush. On July 19, 2006, Marriott announced that all lodging buildings they operate in the United States and Canada would become non-smoking beginning September 2006. Founded in 1927, Marriott International Inc is one of the world‘s largest hospitality groups with over 3,000 lodging properties, 17 brands and more than 151,000 employees. The company‘s sustainability goals are outlined in its five-point global environmental strategy that focuses on: · Environmentally sustainable operations and management · Supply chain · Green buildings · Ecological, cultural, and natural preservation · Employee and guest engagement. Company information Marriott International Inc A was organized as a corporation in Delaware in 1997 and became a public Company in 1998. The Company is a worldwide operator and franchisor of hotels and related lodging facilities. It is a worldwide operator and franchisor of 2,741 hotels and related facilities. Its operations are grouped into five business segments: Full-Service Lodging, Select- Service Lodging, Extended-Stay Lodging, Timeshare and Synthetic Fuel. In the Company's Lodging business, it operates, develops and franchises under 13 separate brand names in 67 countries and territories. Marriott also operates and develops Marriott timeshare properties under four separate brand names. The Company earns base, incentive and franchise fees based upon the terms of its management and franchise agreements. Revenues are also generated from the following sources associated with the Company's Timeshare segment: selling timeshare intervals and personal residences, operating the resorts and financing customer purchases of timesharing intervals. In addition, the Company earns revenues from the limited number of hotels it owns and leases and the Company earns revenues and generates tax credits from its synthetic fuel operations. Marriott is a diversified hospitality Company with operations in five business segments: Full-Service, which includes Marriott Hotels & Resorts, The Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance Hotels & Resorts and Bulgari Hotels & Resorts; Select-Service, which includes Courtyard, Fairfield Inn and Springhill Suites; Extended-Stay, which includes Residence Inn, Towne Place Suites, Marriott Execute stay and Marriott Executive Apartments; Timeshare, which includes the development, marketing, operation and sale of timeshare, fractional, and whole ownership properties under the Marriott Vacation Club International, The Ritz-Carlton Club, Grand Residences by Marriott and Horizons by Marriott Vacation Club brands; and Synthetic Fuel, which includes the Company's interest in the operation of coal-based synthetic fuel production facilities Marriott initially focused its sustainability efforts through its ECHO programme (Environmentally Conscious Hospitality Operations). ECHO focused on water and energy conservation, clean air, recycling, wildlife preservation and neighbor hoods clean-ups. Through this program , it replaced 450,000 incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent lighting, introduced linen re-use systems, and installed 400,000 low-flow showerheads and toilets at its hotels worldwide. Marriott has also reduced water usage by more than 15% over the last five years. In the USA – its largest market – Marriott has the greatest number of US Environmental Protection Agency ‗Energy Star‘ certified hotels of any hotel company to date. Since 2001, all 720US full- service hotels have been benchmarked for best practices, and 275 have secured the Energy Star label. Thirty-four of the company‘s managed golf courses at 25 locations Throughout the USA, Canada and the Caribbean are Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries, protecting the environment by enhancing precious natural areas and wildlife habitats. In 2007, Marriott began a partnership with Conservation International to map the company‘s carbon footprint and develop a five-point environmental strategy for full sustainability. It includes: · Carbon offsets through the protection of rainforest · Further reductions in fuel and water consumption – by 25% per available room over the next ten years – as well as the installation of solar power in up to 40 hotels by 2017 · Engaging the company‘s top 40 vendors to supply greener products across 12 categories of Marriott‘s US$10 billion supply chain · Creation of green construction standards for hotel developers to achieve LEED certification from the US Green Building Council · Educating and inspiring company employees and guests to support the environment, including through green meetings and events. The plan is part of Marriott‘s long-term system-wide environmental policy and focuses on efforts to reduce and offset Marriott‘s global footprint, which was calculated at 3 million metric tons of CO2 emissions annually – or 69.5 pounds per available room. The calculation was certified in autumn 2008 to Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) Standards. Marriot has a company Global Green Council in place to advance its sustainability initiatives. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in its US$2 million investment in the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation which, together with the State of Amazonas in Brazil, helped to establish, monitor and enforce the protection of 1.4 million acres (589,000 hectares) of endangered rainforest in the Juma Sustainable Development Reserve. The Juma Project acts as a sink for carbon emissions through the avoided deforestation of old growth rainforest until 2050. Additional benefits include forest conservation, an improved quality of life for the local population, and biodiversity protection. Marriott‘s ongoing sustainability efforts are helping to set new standards for conservation and environmental stewardship within the global hotel industry. Marriott‘s company-wide energy management system requires uniform auditing and inspection for each of its properties. Marriott collects information through a bimonthly hotel audit, called an Energy Awareness Measure, and daily Routine Inspection Reports which ensure that all properties are actively involved in the company‘s energy conservation action plan. At the end of each quarter, the individual property‘s General Manager and Energy Conservation Committee meet to review the audit forms and inspection reports that have been filed over the previous three months. To date, this method has resulted in an annual US$4.5 million dollar savings to Marriott, demonstrating that energy conservation also has a valuable return on investment for the company.
