Theistareykir, a place with bubbling hot water and white clouds from steam
vents rising to the sky.

Through an area covered with cracks and fissures from earthquakes and
volcanic activity the route leads towards Lake Mývatn where boiling mud
pools and eerie lava formations remind you of the volcanic energy hidden
beneath. We can take a relaxing bathe in an outdoor bathing facility with
hot geothermal water in Jarðböð. The next riding days will take us from the
black sand deserts of Hólssandur to the forested hillsides at Vatnshlíðar-
skógur. Our last riding day over Hvammsheiði Heath towards the shore
offers a terrific view of Skjálfandi Bay before we get back to Saltvík Farm.
After this amazing tour in an ever changing landscape we can relax in
outdoor hot tubs with a great view over to the ocean and the Kinnafjöll
Mountain Range.

Accommodation on this tour is in sleeping bags. One night in a remote
mountain cabin is an adventure, while the other nights are spent at holiday
farms or guesthouses with an outdoor hot tub nearby. Two nights in a
guesthouse with shared facilities in Reykjavík are included, one at the
beginning and one at the end of this tour.

The Lake Mývatn area is often called the Diamond Circle due to the high
density of interesting sights. It witnesses the power of Mother Earth with a
display of eerie lava formations, high rising steam clouds, black sand deserts
and boiling multi-coloured mud pools. The lake itself is a famous breeding
area for ducks, nesting in lush vegetation and raising their ducklings,
sheltered by nature and protected by man. This tour is an alternative for those
who want to combine the excitement of a highland ride with comfortable
accommodation. You also have the advantage of being in a group of
maximum 14 guests, which is fewer than we usually, have on our tours. Our
hosts for this tour are Bjarni Páll and Elsa from Saltvík, well known from the
Northern Exposure tours.

As on the Northern Exposure tour you enjoy the varied terrain surrounding
Lake Mývatn. Our ride starts over Hvammsheiði Heath and we follow Laxá
Salmon River towards Lake Mývatn. A bus brings us to Dimmuborgir, a true
maze made by nature and Hverarönd boiling mud pools and steam vents.
Natural warm water is harnessed at Jarðböð geothermal outdoor pool where
we can swim in the mineral rich water. The riding leads further into the
highlands and we catch a glimpse of Ódáðahraun Lava Field, the largest in
Iceland, before the ride leads towards the shore again. In Bárðardalur Valley
we visit Goðafoss Waterfall and ride partly along the river banks back to
Saltvík Farm. Sail out into the Midnight Sun on an optional whale watching
boat trip on your last night in the north.

On this tour we exchange the usual mountain cabins for beds in double
rooms. Single room accommodation is also possible. Bathroom facilities are
shared and a hot shower is available every night. During the three nights
spent at Saltvík Farm we enjoy two outdoor hot tubs and the amazing view
over the ocean and the Kinnafjöll Mountain Range.

Egill, Gestur and Thórður Our host for this tour is Gestur
                                            and his family from Kálfhóll
Farm. He has been breeding horses for many years and his well trained
horses have been the joy of many clients for the last 2 years.

On our way to the farm we visit Gullfoss Waterfall and the hot springs of
Geysir. From Kálfhóll Farm we head off through fertile farmland and enter
the beautiful trail along mighty river Thjórá. The ride continues towards the
highlands along good riding tracks, through black ash from Mt. Hekla
eruptions to the mountain cabin at Hólaskógur. We continue to the
beautiful area of Landmannahellir, a fitting outpost in the central highlands
before we enjoy the colourful rhyolite mountains in Landmannalaugar,
surrounded by black lava fields where hot water streams have just the right
temperature for a refreshing bath.

Accommodation on this ride is in mountain cabins and a holiday farm in
sleeping bags. Warm showers are available all nights except for one and
the cabin at Hólaskógur also offers a sauna. Include is also a visit to the
swimming pool Reykjalaug, situated in the vaste fields of ashes from the
vulcano Hekla, a true oasis in the wilderness. Two nights are spent in
Reykjavík, in a guesthouse in rooms with shared facilities.
