                                 1. Executive summary

South Africa is the most southern country in the African continent. The country
has been on the up since the drop of the apartheid rule. The Diamond industry
has helped a lot with South Africa becoming a major player in the mining
business, also the recent achievement of the country hosting the 2010 world cup
shows that South Africa is a force to be reckoned with. This is a far cry from of
the state the country was still in from 1948 and 1994.

I was approached by the ASAO (Apartheid in South Africa Organisation) to help them
design an online application giving a history about the rise of apartheid in South
Africa. This they believe was necessary due to South Africa in the world’s spotlight
with the upcoming World Cup and marking the 20th anniversary of the release of
Nelson Mandela, it is necessary that the country’s heritage and history is portrayed
through different avenues and this is a very suitable option. I feel this project is
beneficial because it would give people an insight into what the black people of
South Africa had to endure under the apartheid rule and what the current state of
the country is.

I developed a social network website called ‘South Africa Apartheid’ using the Ning
social website application to upload videos, pictures and articles from the time of
the apartheid rule. I also presentenced images of how the country is now including
current problems and struggles it faces, building a new status as a respected African
country with its proud and rich history.
I felt a social network was a suitable idea because a rich abundance of information
was uploaded into the system.

In the world we live in now, we seemed to have forgotten and do not recognise
the struggles that people had to endure for equality to exist and I feel the
apartheid in South Africa is a perfect example of when people were looked down
on by the colour of their skin by other races who felt they were superior.

I spoke a bit about how racial segregation between white and black people was
in place and examine how a country with about 80% of the population being
black were overpowered and dictated to by foreign white people with visual
information such as pictures and videos. I am going to give instances of
important events which took place in the apartheid rule being introduced and
abolished e.g. ‘The Sharpeville Massacre’, ‘The Soweto Uprising’ and so on. I plan
to upload digital images to emphasis these events and articles.

I also had forum pages for people to voice their opinions looking at how the rest
of the world including human rights organisations reacted and acted towards the
events that were occurring in the country South Africa.

I had pictures, videos and articles discussing the uprising and violence that
erupted which led to a lot of bloodshed and the importance of the role Nelson
Mandela and he’s political party ANC (African National Congress) played in the
development of an equal South Africa.

Meetings were set up with representatives of the organisation stating what the clear
aims and objectives of what the website should consist of giving what events and
incidents they would like to see uploaded on it.

The end users were people who were interested on the history of the country and
were given extra features of how to navigate around the system to perform certain
tasks such as click pictures and a summary of the history of the picture would be was
below.
They would interact with the system by going into the catalogue and clicking on
videos or pictures to retrieve information about them and also able to sign up and
join as a member with the chance to write blog and also the ability to add friends to
the community.

It was similar to other social network such as MySpace, Twitter and Facebook with
links that would direct users to them.
Pictures and videos of major events that took place during this era were carefully
selected depending on how significant the incident was and Ning gave the extra
feature of being able to give a summary and inform people about what the picture
or video was about.
Forums and blogs pages were also available for user interaction where topics could
be put up for discussions in relation to South Africa.

                 2. Detailed description and analysis of the project

After a lot of time deciding what application to use to design the project, I finally
changed mind original idea of basing the project on a digital asset management
system, instead I decided to create a social network using Ning.com because it
provided a free platform to use to create these networks informed my client of this
change and explained my reasons which they understood. I was disappointed that I
could not base it on my original idea due to the fact that digital asset management
system had to be purchased and the one I came across where quite expensive and
my client wanted something which would not cost them a lot.
My project is a social network website about the rise of apartheid in South Africa. I
feel this project is beneficial because it would give people an insight into what the
black people of South Africa had to endure under the apartheid rule.

I plan to develop a social network with upload of videos, pictures and articles from
the time of the apartheid rule. I also would present images of how the country is
now including current problems and struggles it faces, building a new status as a
respected African country with its proud and rich history.

Videos from importantly events that occurred during the apartheid era such as ‘The
Sharpeville Massacre’ and other important events would be available for user to
view, blog posts and comments could be left by users and viewers of the website
voicing their opinions and discussions could be carried out in the discussion forum.

Ning provides a lot of features that can be used to project information effectively to
audience weather be it photos, videos than can be uploaded in multiple ways. It is
also similar to other social network platforms such as facebook, twitter and MySpace
with a link to perform tasks such as uploading details of events to them and so on. A
particular topic could be created with your own ideas and vast information could be
implemented with really any restrictions. The network also makes life easy for user
by given guides an explanation of how to perform tasks.

The purpose of the system is to enlighten people about an important part of South
Africa’s history bearing in mind that the history can sometimes be forgotten but can
also be preserved by using thing such as videos, photos, websites and articles to
keep the memory and enlighten people who show an interest in such topics.

User would be able to navigate through the website by clicking on pictures, playing
videos, reading blogs and articles also opinions could be voiced.

I am going to get my content from sources such as YouTube, related websites to
apartheid, watch videos and related articles. I’ll put the content I feel would provide
valuable and important information about apartheid to interested people.

            4. Theoretical or intellectual issues addressed in the project

I put a lot of thought in the way I wanted to structure my project and the
information I wanted it to contain. A brief history of the country in general was
written to give users an idea of the background.
There’s a lot of articles and information of South Africa as a country but I wanted my
main focus to be the topic of apartheid as it was what the website was designed to
                                          be about.
Videos of important events such as ‘The Trojan Horse Massacre’ where uploaded to
give users and viewers a graphic account of the violence suffered during the
apartheid rule and how black people where suppressed by the white governments,
pictures of ‘Soweto Uprising also shows how the black people tried to fight back.
A brief biography of Nelson Mandela would be given in a blog post and a video of
he’s release would be upload in the videos section for interested parties to view to
mark the 20th anniversary of he’s release, the struggles he went through and how he
became the first black president of the country after the demise of the apartheid
                                             rule.
This topic is also appropriate due to the forthcoming world cup that would be taking
place in South Africa this year. This a major achievement for not only the country but
Africa as whole because it is the first time such a global event would be entrusted in
the hands of an African country. It is also good for tourism showing the history and
development of the country and its history.

It was also important that I put up vital information of how the country as developed
and where it now gives people an idea of how the country as evolved and changed.
Also a few videos and articles where uploaded showing that apartheid has not totally
been eradicated from South Africa and a video showing a white supremacists talking
down to a black female news presenter was a perfect example for viewers to see
that there is still racial tension and uprising gradually building up again in the
                                           country.

A link about a recent documentary showing wives of rich and wealthy footballers’
wives visiting South Africa before the world cup is also uploaded talking about the
AIDS epidemic in South Africa and how it has affected people’s lives.

What I am enduring to achieve is to give interested people rich information about
the Apartheid era in South Africa. There lots of similar websites relating to this topic,
but I wanted my social network to cover a boarder range of how the information was
given and make it interactive which was achieved.

                                  5. Project review

I feel my project was a success because I managed to cover all the important ground
and relevant information to the satisfaction of my client by covering all the main
topics about South Africa ‘Apartheid’ to people who have never heard or know
nothing about the history . I also talked a bit about the current state of the country
and what important achievements such as the world cup and Nelson Mandela to
give people a bit more information on a broader content which impressed my client.
The website is interactive where people could voice their opinions and upload
valuable information to the websites by becoming members of the network. It has a
mixture of written and visual information which would keep users captivated and
                                        informed.
The project was a success because users would not find it hard to use and navigate
and is very information with room for more information and improvements to be
                                    added if need be
                                             .
