Job Summary:

Performs chairside assistance and related duties in all phases of restorative, prosthodontic,
surgical, endodontic, interceptive orthodontic, and periodontal treatment as provided in general
dentistry. In association with the itinerant dental program, the incumbent may also travel to rural
field clinics to perform these duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Prepares patient, sterilizes and disinfects instruments, sets up instrument trays, prepares
   materials, and assists dentist during dental procedures.
2. Performs intra-oral procedures as directed by dentist.
3. Aids in the training of on-the-job trainee dental assistants, students, and dentists.
4. As required, travels to rural, remote areas in conjunction with needs of field dental program.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High School Diploma or GED.
2. Completion of dental assistant training program, or equivalent training and experience.
   Certification preferred, but not required.
3. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required or ability to obtain certification.
4. Experience working with Alaska Natives and/or other Native Americans is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of procedures used in dental clinic for receiving, routing and scheduling patients,
   ordering supplies and for requesting related services.
2. Knowledge of the instruments, materials and standardized dental procedures used in the full
   variety of treatments provided in general dentistry procedures to make preparations and
   provide chairside assistance.
3. Knowledge of dental anatomy and bony structure of face to take diagnostic dental
   radiographs.
4. Skill in operating and adjusting digital and non-digital dental radiographic equipment.
5. Knowledge of and skill in detecting signs of syncope, chock or other side reactions to dental
   treatment in-patients.
6. Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards.
7. Proficiency in the use of computer based software used to store and retrieve patient and office
   information.

8. Knowledge of HIPAA, Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, Infection Control and Hazard
   Communication Standards.
9. Employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care
   appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned unit.

Working Environment:

Long periods of bending, standing, and walking are required. Lift up to 20 lbs is required. Work
involves regular and recurring exposure to potential hazards of radiation and communicable
diseases. A facemask, safety glasses, and non-latex gloves are required when assisting during
treatment of a patient. The incumbent is also required to take the Hepatitis B vaccine and other
immunizations as required. During surgical procedures nitrous oxide and other anesthetic gases
may be present in the environment. Work environment may include remote clinic sites.

Work Condition:

Hours of work are Monday tthrough Friday, 8:30a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with one hour for lunch.
These hours are subject to change during village trips and Clinic needs. Chugachmiut maintains a
drug/alcohol free and non-smoking environment. There is travel to the villages of the Chugach
region requiring flights in light aircract. Incumbent must be willing and able to travel in light
aircraft.
