									Web-based Short Course in
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Presented by the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases (DVTD), Faculty of Veterinary
Science, University of Pretoria (UP), in collaboration with the Department of Animal Health of
the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium; and with the support of the Department
of Production Animal Studies (UP)

ACP-EU Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), the Netherlands,
supports this module by making scholarships available for candidates from the SADC Region
and other African-Caribbean-Pacific (ACP) countries who meet the requirements of CTA. CTA
and DVTD will conduct a joint evaluation of the course as soon as it is completed.

PURPOSE OF COURSE

The purpose of this short course is to equip candidates with the ability to:
   • professionally plan and undertake a research project,
   • collect and analyse data, and
   • apply a scientific style of writing in the presentation of research results.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
On completion of the course, candidates will be able to:
   • plan and execute a research protocol
   • design experiments and surveys appropriate to the study objectives
   • identify various types of scientific data and their collection procedures
   • organise scientific data for analysis and interpretation
   • demonstrate the principles and procedures for effective scientific writing
   • make effective oral presentations
   • plan and design a poster presentation of research results
   • write effective grant proposals to support and sustain research

WHO SHOULD ENROL?

Everybody wishing to obtain a postgraduate qualification, or wishing to acquire the skills
necessary to conduct research.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A bachelor’s degree in Veterinary, Biological or Agricultural Sciences,
or
A diploma in Veterinary or Medical Technology or an equivalent qualification, or appropriate
experience (as judged by the course leader) will also suffice. Access to the Internet is a pre-
requisite.
 COURSE STRUCTURE

 The course will be done via the Internet.

 ACCREDITATION/CERTIFICATION

 This programme is provided by an accredited higher education provider. The course has a
 NQF level of 7.

 A certificate from the University of Pretoria will be awarded to all candidates who successfully
 complete the assignments.

 COURSE FEE

 R2 400 per delegate. All course material is included. The course material will consist of the
 course notes in PDF format and references to relevant publications and websites.
