                     ESU #6 and Southeast Community College


SUMMARY

The Career Academy Coordinators will be responsible for organizing, planning, and
overseeing the day to day operation of the Academies.



QUALIFICATIONS

   •   Hold a current Nebraska teaching/administrative certificate.
   •   Experience as a classroom teacher, building principal, or central office
       administrator.
   •   Strong people/relational skills and the ability to work with a variety of
       professionals including: educators, businessmen, NDE, higher education, parents,
       and students.
   •   Proven leadership skills and the ability to influence others to move in a direction
       that would have a meaningful and positive impact on the Career Academies.
   •   Have the necessary technology skills to effectively lead those participating
       including experience with the following: online classes, distance learning, blogs,
       chat room, etc.
   •   Understands the importance and relevance of education and careers and is willing
       to promote the integration of career opportunities for students in K-12 schools.
   •   A self-starter who exhibits strong organizational skills. Efficient use of time.
   •   Highly motivated individual who is both energetic and enthusiastic.
   •   Flexibility in working with various individuals and groups of people. Ability to
       alter work schedule to accommodate the needs of the students and schools
       represented in the Career Academies. (Must be willing and available to work
       during the summer months).
   •   Strong (both written and spoken) communication skills.
   •   Ability to make effective and meaningful connections and networking with
       individuals, organizations, schools, businesses, etc.
   •   Experience with career education programs or working with businesses and
       higher education programs is preferred but not required. An entrepreneurial
       thinker.
   •   Have a willingness to be a continuous learner and be open to suggestions and new
       ideas.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  •   Oversee the day to day operation of the Career Academies in the assigned region.
  •   Work directly with the Career Academy Partnership Administrator on all aspects
      of the program.
  •   Communicate regularly with administrators, counselors, teachers, and students in
      your region – keeping them updated on what is happening with the Academies.
      Have a contact person identified for each school within the region.
  •   Coordinate classes on a daily basis making certain all aspects of the Academy are
      covered including: instructor (which may be the Coordinator on certain days),
      necessary materials, classroom space in each school, attendance for all students,
      etc.
  •   Set up the daily classroom schedule for the entire semester.
  •   Secure guest speakers to present to the Academies throughout the semester
      (preferably one per week).
  •   Set up and coordinate job shadowing for all students within your region
      (preferably one per week).
  •   Set up field trips for students within your assigned region to visit career related
      businesses, programs, etc.
  •   Work with SCC and their instructors to make certain the presentations and
      instruction are of the highest quality.
  •   Make sure all details are worked out for the dual credit courses from SCC.
  •   Serve as the “teacher of record” when needed (if the instructor from higher
      education is not qualified or properly certified).
  •   Have all materials, books, supplies needed for each Academy identified and
      available for use by the students.
  •   Determine the curriculum requirements for the entire semester for each Academy.
  •   Develop “hot topics” to be discussed by students on a weekly basis.
  •   Establish strong relationships with the CEO’s or administrators from the
      respective hospitals, businesses, etc.
  •   Work with schools in the assigned region to establish transportation plans for
      students. (Car pooling; provided by school; student responsibility, etc.)
  •   Assist in the development of the best delivery system for the Academies which
      may include; direct, face to face instruction (at a regional satellite location),
      online courses, distance learning, or other options.
  •   Be available to the students to provide assistance with coursework, answer
      questions, support their efforts, and to make certain that all of the requirements of
      the Academy are being met.
  •   Work with the school counselors in developing Career Education Plans for every
      student through NDE Career Connections, starting in grade six.
  •   Help with the registration of Academy students and take care of all the other
      forms that are required for participation.
  •   Assist the CAP Administrator, the counselors, and administration in promoting
      the Career Academies to students in the assigned region.
  •   Other duties as assigned or requested by participating schools.
