Hands-On Time
How to Search for and Download Podcasts with iTunes
Step 1: Set iTunes Playback Preferences
• Launch iTunes • Adjust iTunes Playback Preferences • PC users: Click Edit/Preferences/
Playback Mac users: Click iTunes/ Preferences/Playback select Play Movies & TV shows “in artwork viewer” select Play Music Videos “in artwork viewer” Click OK Now be sure the Artwork window is visible - it should say “nothing playing.” If the artwork window is not visible, click the icon.
•
• •
• • •
Step 2: Go to the iTunes Store
• • •
In the left-hand column, locate the category titled “STORE” Click on “iTunes Store” Now your content window will refresh with the current iTunes Store showcased items.
Step 3: Search for Podcasts
• •
In the iTunes Store, there are two ways to search for podcasts. 1) click on the Podcasts category in the iTunes Store menu (here you will find podcasts uploaded by the general public about everything and anything!) 2) click on iTunes U in the iTunes Store menu (here you will find educational podcasts from colleges, universities, and museums from around the world.
•
Step 4: Using Power Search
•
Locate the Quick Links box to the right and try out the Power Search function to help customize your search in either the Podcast or iTunes U area. After you click on Power Search, select either iTunes U or Podcasts from the Power Search drop down menu. This will restrict your search to content within this category. Enter keywords into the nearby search boxes. Click search. A list of relevant podcast episodes will appear below.
•
• • •
Step 5: Understanding Your Results
•
The screenshot here shows the results of a Power Search within iTunes U with the word “Spanish” in the description field. The first box provides me with direct links to “Institutions” with related podcasts. The next box showcases links to podcasts with “Spanish” as a keyword (notice the option to “see all”). I can go to the individual podcast page by clicking on any square podcast icon. The box below provides a list of specific podcast episodes related to my search. Note: podcasts designated with “Get Movie” are videos. “Get” designates an audio or enhanced podcast. Also, if you click on the arrow, you will go directly to the podcast page that episode is associated with. Go ahead and click on an Arrow to go to a podcast page.
• •
•
Step 6: Understanding a Podcast Page
• •
Remember, a podcast is like a magazine comprised of many episodes. Every podcast in iTunes has itʼs own “homepage” that looks similar to the image here. It includes a title, icon, description and links in the top section. The individual episodes appear in a list on the bottom of your screen. Note each podcast may also include separate tabs of content (this one includes an “Audio” and a “Transcripts” tab -- a great way to create ADA accessible podcasts!!) The user (you) have the option to download individual episodes by clicking “Get” next to the one(s) you want OR you may click “Subscribe” if you want to ensure that you receive all future episodes delivered to you in iTunes (Note: you must subscribe from YOUR computer).
•
•
Step 7: How to Download an Episode
•
Sometimes people get confused about where to find an episode after itʼs been downloaded. This page explains this process. I want to download the episode titled “Eating out in Valencia” so I click “Get” next to this episode. After I click get, the episode will download from the iTunes Store onto my computer. After itʼs done, iTunes automatically creates a “Playlist” titled Open University (the Institutionʼs title) in the Playlist category in my left toolbar. Beneath this, I see the name of this podcast, “Portales: beginnerʼs Spanish.” This is where I click to access the file that Iʼve just downloaded to my hard drive (see next page).
• • •
Step 8: How to Play Your Downloaded Episode
•
After I click on the name of the podcast in my playlist, I can see the individual episode file I just downloaded, titled “Eating Out in Valencia.” I am now read to play my file! All I need to do is highlight the file and click on the Play button. After I click, play on a downloaded file I will see any associated images that accompany that file. If itʼs an audio file, of course, there are no images (or there may be a single artwork image). Remember, if itʼs a movie or an enhanced podcast you may not see any of the related images unless you download the podcast -- this is important information for your students after you develop your own podcast! You can also enlarge the “artwork” viewer by clicking on it one time.
• •
Step 8: How do I get back to the iTunes Store?
•
Thatʼs easy! Just click on iTunes Store in the left column and youʼre back to where you started.
How do I access Sierra College on iTunes U?
