The Doctrine of the Rapture
In the Blink of an Eye
God desires to:
• glorify Himself
• by establishing His kingdom on earth
• through human representation.
In the Blink of an Eye

When and how will God finally
establish His kingdom on
earth?
In the Blink of an Eye
Major End-Times Viewpoints:
1. Premillennial – There will be a future
   1000-year kingdom on earth.
2. Amillennial – The kingdom is spiritual only
   and present in the Church.
3. Postmillennial – The Church will usher in
   the kingdom through its evangelistic
   efforts.

The Rapture:
I. What is it?
In the Blink of an Eye
Then we who are alive and remain will be
caught up (Latin = rapere) together with
them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the
air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.
                    1 Thessalonians 4:17
In the Blink of an Eye
Rapture ≠ 2nd Coming of Christ
Before Trib. After Trib.
We meet Jesus Jesus comes down
     in the air to earth
Peaceful Vengeful
In the Blink of an Eye

And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a
white horse, and He who sat on it is called
Faithful and True, and in righteousness He
judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame
of fire, and on His head are many diadems;
and He has a name written on Him which
no one knows except Himself. He is clothed
with a robe dipped in blood, and His name
is called The Word of God.
In the Blink of an Eye
And the armies which are in heaven,
clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were
following Him on white horses. From His
mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it
He may strike down the nations, and He will
rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads
the wine press of the fierce wrath of God,
the Almighty.
                    Revelation 19:11-15
In the Blink of an Eye
Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all
sleep, but we will all be changed, in a
moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the
last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and
the dead will be raised imperishable, and
we will be changed.
                     1 Corinthians 15:51-52

The Rapture:
I. What is it?
II. When will it happen?
In the Blink of an Eye
Timing of the Rapture:
1. Pretribulation
2. Midtribulation
3. Posttribulation
In the Blink of an Eye
Why Pretribulational?
1. The Doctrine of Imminence.
In the Blink of an Eye
Doctrine of Imminence:
Jesus is expected to return at any moment.
The early church lived with this expectation.
In the Blink of an Eye
You too be patient; strengthen your hearts,
for the coming of the Lord is near.
                               James 5:8
In the Blink of an Eye
Why Pretribulational?
1. The Doctrine of Imminence.
2. The Restrainer in 2 Thess 2:1-8.
3. Daniel Prophecy.
In the Blink of an Eye
“Seventy weeks have been decreed for your
people and your holy city, to finish the
transgression, to make an end of sin, to make
atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting
righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and
to anoint the most holy place. So you are to know
and discern that from the issuing of a decree to
restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the
Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two
weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat,
even in times of distress.
In the Blink of an Eye
Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah
will be cut off and have nothing, and the
people of the prince who is to come will
destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its
end will come with a flood; even to the end
there will be war; desolations are
determined.
In the Blink of an Eye
And he will make a firm covenant with the
many for one week, but in the middle of the
week he will put a stop to sacrifice and
grain offering; and on the wing of
abominations will come one who makes
desolate, even until a complete destruction,
one that is decreed, is poured out on the
one who makes desolate.”
                         Daniel 9:24-27
In the Blink of an Eye
“decree to restore Jerusalem” =
           March 5, 444 B.C.

“sixty-two and seven weeks” = 483 Jewish
  years
1 Jewish year = 360 days
483 Jewish years = 173,880 days
In the Blink of an Eye
173,880 days =
          476 Gregorian years (365 days)
March 5, 444 B.C. + 476 years =
                    March 30, A.D. 33!
In the Blink of an Eye
But where did the seventieth week go?
-It will occur sometime after the
     destruction of Jerusalem (A.D. 70).
-It must occur while Israel exists as a
     nation (post-1948).
-Its purpose is to restore Israel.
     -It is after the Rapture.
In the Blink of an Eye
Why Pretribulational?
1. The Doctrine of Imminence.
2. The Restrainer in 2 Thess 2:1-8.
3. Daniel Prophecy.
4. Revelation 4-16: No mention of the
   Church.

The Rapture:
I. What is it?
II. When will it happen?
III. Why is it necessary?
In the Blink of an Eye
Why is it necessary?
-To redeem the nation of Israel and allow
God to fulfill His promises (Rom 11:25-27).
-To provide all nations a chance to accept
 Jesus as Savior.
In the Blink of an Eye
The Rapture:
I. What is it?
II. When will it happen?
III. Why is it necessary?
IV. Why should we care about it?
In the Blink of an Eye
Why should we care about the Rapture?
1. Comfort in the face of death (1 Thess.
     4:18).
2. Reason to praise God (Phil 3:20-21).
3. Motivation to pursue Christ’s Commission
   (James 5:8).
In the Blink of an Eye
If Jesus returns today, will He find us
faithfully obeying His Commission?
