Langston Hughes Poet and Community Helper Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, in 1902. He was an only child and was raised by his grandmother. Langston Hughes was focused on becoming a writer and poet from the early years of his life. His writing included journalism, books for children, humor, lyrics, drama, radio scripts, and, above, all, poetry. He travelled inEurope and Africa, lived in Mexico, Paris, Italy and the Soviet Union. But his heart and home were in Harlem where he lived for many years.Upon his return he was welcomed will great love and appreciation by the movement taking place in Harlem. LANGSTON HUGHES, became part of the Harlem Renaissance and was known during his lifetime as "the poet laureate of Harlem.” His poems, which tell of the joys and miseries of the ordinary black man in America, have been widely translated. Dream Deferred What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- and then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load Or does it just explode? Dreams Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. Langston Hughes received various awards for his writing. He write a best seller called Simple Speaks His Mind. He also write a play that ran on Broadway. He died in 1967.
