                1 Your control panel

Your Fasthosts control panel is the heart of your new hosting package.
With just a few clicks, you can manage your website and email, see how many
visitors your website has received and add other services such as broadband.

To start using your control panel, visit https://www.fasthosts.co.uk/login and
enter the username and password that we sent you in your welcome email.

Don’t worry if you ever forget your username and password.
Click Forgotten your password? on the login page and we’ll send a reminder to
the email address held on your account.

Please keep your email address up to date in your control panel at all times.

2 Setting up your domain name

When you opened your Fasthosts account, you told us which domain name
you want to use for your website and email. If you registered a new domain
name this will also be configurable in your new account.

What you need to do next depends on whether you’ve registered a new
domain or if you plan to use a domain name you already have.

You can learn more in our introduction to domain name registration:
                  http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/knowledge-base/?article_id=988

Important: It may take up to 72 hours before all ISPs know that your
website and email are hosted with Fasthosts. Find out more:
                          http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/knowledge-base/?article_id=989
If your domain doesn’t work after 72 hours, please contact us.

                  2.1 I registered a new domain name

When you opened your account, we registered your new domain name
straight away for you. You don’t need to do anything else to ensure your
                  domain works.

2.2 I chose to transfer an existing domain name to Fasthosts

To transfer your domain name to Fasthosts, you need to contact the
company that currently looks after your domain registration. The exact
process is different depending on whether or not your domain ends in “.uk”.

2.3 I chose to leave my domain name with its current provider

If you’d prefer to keep your domain registration with your current provider,
you can still use it with your new Fasthosts account. Simply ask your domain
registration provider to change the domain’s nameserver records to:

                        • ns2.livedns.co.uk
                        • ns3.livedns.co.uk

3 Setting up your first email address

To send and receive email using your domain name, you need to set up at least one
          mailbox.

Through your control panel, you can set up three different types of mailbox:

                • Advanced – virus and spam protected POP3 mailbox.
                • Standard – basic POP3 mailbox, ideal for occasional email users.
                • Exchange – business class mailbox, with advanced calendar, tasks and contacts.

Quick tip: To create an email address that automatically forwards
to another email service, such as Gmail or Yahoo! Mail, you need to
set up a mail forwarder. Find out how:
                          http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/knowledge-base/?article_id=540

3.1 Creating a mailbox in your control panel

For this example, we’ll use the email address “geoff@yourdomain.co.uk”.
Replace this with the email address you want to create.

Step 1 If this is the first, or only package in your account skip to step 4.

Step 2 Click Configure your packages in the Email & web hosting section on your control panel
          home page.

Step 3 Click your domain name in your Domains & packages list.

Click Create a new email address.
 Step 4

Step 5 Choose the type of mailbox you would like to set up.
This guide is written assuming that you are creating an Advanced mailbox, but we have
other guides and articles to help you set up other types of mailbox.

Step 6 Enter a name for your new mailbox. In our example it’s “geoff”.
Then, create and confirm a password that you’ll use to access your email.

Step 7 Click the Finish button and the control panel will create your new mailbox instantly.

On the Email settings page, you’ll see that we’ve automatically created two email
addresses for you: “postmaster” and “root”. You can find out more about these in the
          following article: http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/knowledge-base/?article_id=992

Don’t forget that it could take up to 72 hours before you can send and receive email
          using your domain name.

Important: If you plan to use your new email address as your main email
address, we recommend you update your Fasthosts account contact details.

3.2 Accessing your email with Outlook Express

You can access your email using almost any email software (client).
Outlook Express comes with Windows XP and is the most commonly used email client.

Step 1 Click the Windows Start button in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen, then click
All Programs. Find Outlook Express in the list of software and click it. Outlook Express
          will open.

Note: If the Internet Connection Setup wizard starts automatically, skip to step 4.

Step 2 Click the Tools menu, then click Accounts.

Step 3 The Internet Accounts window will open.
Click Add in the top right corner. Click Mail in the menu that appears. This will open the
          Internet Connection Wizard.

Step 4 On the first screen of the Internet Connection Wizard, you’ll be asked to enter a display
name. This is what most email users will see when they receive email from you instead of
your email address. Enter your name, then click Next.

Step 5 Enter your full email address – e.g. geoff@yourdomain.co.uk – then click Next.

Setting up your website & email

Step 6 On the E-mail Server Names screen, select POP3 from the “My incoming mail server is a”
          drop-down list.

Step 7 Enter mail.yourdomain.co.uk (replacing yourdomain.co.uk with your domain name) in
the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server text box.

Step 8 Enter smtp.fasthosts.co.uk in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server text box, then click Next.

Step 9 On the Internet Mail Logon screen, enter your full email address in the Account name
text box. If you enter just the mailbox name or your control panel username, this will not
          work.

Step 10 When you created the mailbox in your control panel, you chose a password.
Enter this in the Password box.

Important: Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) should not be
                   selected.

Step 11 Click Next.

Setting up your website & email

Step 12 Outlook Express will let you know that you’ve successfully entered the information it
needs. Click Finish and the mailbox will be added to Outlook Express.

Step 13 You will be left at the Internet Accounts window.

Step 14 Click the Mail tab, then double click the email account you have just set up.

Step 15 Click the Servers tab. Under Outgoing Mail Server, ensure the My server requires
authentication check-box is selected, then click OK.

Quick tip: Some ISPs try to prevent their customers from using other provider’s
email servers. See the following article to find out what to do:
                  http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/knowledge-base/?article_id=623

Step 16 Finally, click the Tools menu, then click Options.
Set how often you want Outlook Express to check your mailbox for new mail in the
          Check for new messages box.
Click OK, then click Close and your new email account is now ready to use.

3.3 Other ways to access your email

If you’d prefer not to use Outlook Express, or don’t use Windows, follow one of our email

4 Creating and uploading your website

Publishing your website is easy. You have three different ways to do it:

                       • Use SiteBuilder, our easy website creation tool.
                       • Create your website on your PC, then upload it using FTP.
                       • Create your website with Microsoft FrontPage, then publish it with
                           FrontPage Extensions.

Important: You can only use one of these options at a time.
If you try to use more than one, you may lose some of your files or
                           damage your website.

4.1 Creating a website with SiteBuilder

SiteBuilder makes it easy to create a professional website without HTML or
web design skills. Simply choose from a wide range of templates, then add
the pages and content you need.

Activating SiteBuilder in your control panel

Step 1 Log into your control panel and visit your web hosting package page, by
clicking your domain name on the “Domains & packages” list page.

Step 2 Then click SiteBuilder in the Easy website creation section.

Step 3 Choose the number of pages you need for your new website.
Your package includes up to 10 SiteBuilder pages free!

Setting up your website & email

You can easily upgrade your SiteBuilder plan if you need more pages later.

Note: The size of your web space does not affect the number of
pages you can create using SiteBuilder.

Step 4 Choose the username and password that you want to use to access
SiteBuilder. Your username must be unique on our system, so we recommend
that you use your domain name.

Step 5 Click the Activate SiteBuilder button.

Step 6 Confirm any additional payments required (e.g. if you’ve chosen a higher
                 SiteBuilder plan) by clicking OK.

Step 7 Once SiteBuilder has been activated on your domain name, you’ll be able to
log in at “http://sitebuilder.yourdomain.co.uk” (replace yourdomain.co.uk
                 with your domain name).

Note: If you set up your web hosting package less than 72 hours
ago, you may not be able to log into SiteBuilder using your domain
name. Instead, you can log in via the SiteBuilder page in your
                         control panel.

                 Learning how to use SiteBuilder
You can learn how to build your website by clicking the yellow question mark
icon in the bottom right corner of the screen, once you have logged into
                 SiteBuilder.

4.2 Uploading your website from Microsoft FrontPage

If you use Microsoft FrontPage to design your website, you can upload it
                   directly to your web space.

First, you need to activate FrontPage Extensions on your domain.
                   Find out how: http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/knowledge-base/?article_id=34

Once you’ve activated FrontPage Extensions, follow the instructions
provided with your Microsoft FrontPage software to publish your site.
You will need the username and password that you chose when you
                   activated FrontPage Extensions.

4.3 Uploading your website with FTP

If you have designed your website using Dreamweaver, or other web design
software, you can upload it using FTP (File Transfer Protocol).

Internet Explorer lets you connect to your web space using FTP, making it as
easy as dragging and dropping files from one folder to another.

To use FTP, you need to find your FTP login details and set your FTP
                   password, using your control panel.

Step 1 Log into your control panel and visit your web hosting package page, by
clicking your domain name on the “Domains & packages” list page.

Step 2 Click FTP in the Publish your website section.

Step 3 Enter, then confirm, a password you want to use for FTP, then click the
                   Set FTP password button.

You can now upload files to your web space using FTP.
