Dear Sir or Madam:

The residents of Southbridge, Cherry Hill, Princeton Woods and River Oaks have only
recently become aware of your plans to place a Wal-Mart in front of our homes on Route
1 between Wayside and Cherry Hill. While we do not oppose you as a company we are
opposed to your proposed location. Where there is a need, Wal-Mart has provided
valuable services to many communities. In your proposed location there is no need, only
a duplication of efforts including yours.

As you are aware there is already a Wal-Mart located in the Potomac Mills area in
Woodbridge, which is only 5 miles away from the proposed locale. Potomac Mills
provides such a wealth of shopping that most of us in our community frequent the area at
least weekly. While there, going to Wal-Mart and/or Sam’s Club is extremely convenient
as it is in the middle of everything. People, who may not have planned to go to Wal-
Mart, when seeing it across the parking lot, may choose to go in. Located on Route 1,
Wal-Mart would be dependent on those whose sole intent is to go to Wal-Mart without
the benefit of any spillover shoppers. A Wal-Mart on Route 1 in Dumfries will not
satisfy our need or desire to go up to Potomac Mills, so what’s the point?

A Wal-Mart located on Route 1 in Dumfries, VA will not add to your customer base; it
will only dilute the clientele serving your Woodbridge, VA location. This would be
tantamount to ruining a perfectly good soup by diluting it with too much water. Wal-
Mart is to savvy a business to engage in such self-destructive behavior
