Remuneration: Depending on background and experience, the post carries a
minimum net annual remuneration of US$55,259

Under the general direction of the Chief, Environment and Development Division, and the supervision of the
Chief of Environment and Development Policy Section, the incumbent will be engaged in the
implementation of the work programme in particular in relation to promoting environmentally sustainable
economic growth and the organization and servicing of meetings, seminars and workshops. In performing
the duties, the incumbent will work closely with the media task force established for the Sixth Ministerial
Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific, which will be held in Astana,
Kazakhstan from 27 September to 2 October 2010. The main task will include the implementation of the
media and publicity strategy prepared by the media task force. The Conference provides a high level
forum for relevant Ministers from ESCAP member states to review the state of environmental sustainability;
formulate regional voices and perspectives for further promoting sustainable and inclusive development;
and adopt a set of concrete actions of regional cooperation for the next five years. Specific duties are as
• Develop media, web and PR related materials, including leaflets, posters, brochures, presentation
formats, flash multi-media presentations, etc based on the EDD media strategy and in close
consultation with the MCED-6 team in Republic of Kazakhstan.
• Coordinate all media events in close coordination with UNIS and the MCED-6 team in Republic of
Kazakhstan, and maintain an updated media events schedule.
• Coordinate the preparation of all official speeches and speaking notes for the MCED-6 sessions
• Coordinate all preparatory activities for the official ESCAP exhibition at the MCED-6.
• Liaise with relevant UN and other international organizations for promoting consistent messages of
“UN Delivering as One” throughout the Ministerial Conference, including during press events.
• Liaise with other ESCAP divisions, including in particular, the office of Executive Secretary,
ensuring consistency of messages to enhance the policy impacts of the MCED-6.
• Assist with the promotion of the main outcomes of the MCED-6, including with the production of the
final report publication.
• Performing other duties as may be assigned by the Section Chief or Division Chief.

Education: Advanced university degree in an environmental policy related field. A first-level
university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of
the advanced university degree.
Work Experience: At least five years of work experience in international organizations, preferably within the
UN common system, in media related work, including understanding and knowledge of
contemporary public relations approaches and tools, as well as their application for
enhancing the impact of intergovernmental meetings. Good knowledge of the
sustainable development challenges in the Asian and Pacific region is desirable.
Knowledge of substantive aspects related to environmentally sustainable economic
growth and environmental policy will be an advantage.
Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For
this post, fluency in written and oral English with excellent drafting skills is essential.
Knowledge of another official UN language, in particular Russian, would be an
Other Skills: Familiarity with standard computer programmes, such as MS Office, is required.
Knowledge and understanding, as well as hands on experience with web and design
software and multi-media packages is required.
