Course Description
This course is designed to increase awareness of the primary and
secondary effects of neuromuscular disease on cardiopulmonary
function and to increase the skill of primary-care physicians and
specialists who manage the cardiopulmonary needs of patients
with neuromuscular disease. The information presented also will
have direct relevance for managing the cardiopulmonary aspects of
patients with ventilatory insufficiency due to other orthopaedic or
central nervous system disorders. The course will present current
and accepted protocols, current research and new horizons in
patient care.


Course Objectives
After completing this course, participants should be able to:
• Identify common types of neuromuscular disease and their
  primary and secondary cardiopulmonary effects
• Identify cardiac pathophysiology and management of cardiac
  abnormalities in neuromuscular disease
• Identify pulmonary pathophysiology and management of
  ventilatory failure in neuromuscular disease
• Understand current concepts in cell-based treatment of
  cardiomyopathy


Accreditation
Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare is accredited by the
Minnesota Medical Association to provide continuing medical
education (CME) for physicians and takes responsibility for the
content, quality and scientific integrity of this activity.

Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare designates this
educational activity for a maximum of 6.5 hours in Category 1
credit toward the Physician Recognition Award. Physicians should
claim only the hours of credit that they actually spend in the
educational activity.

Application for CME credit has been filed with the American
Academy of Family Physicians. A request for continuing education
units has also been filed on behalf of physical, occupational and
speech therapists.
