  Course Description
Welcome to Chemistry P! This class is an introductory college preparatory course that provides an exciting, hands-
on investigation into the discipline of Chemistry. Chemistry involves the study of matter and energy, and centers
on the development of problem solving skills. This emphasis on problem solving dictates the course prerequisite of
a grade of “B” or better in Algebra I. This course satisfies one year of the laboratory course requirements for
high school graduation, as well as one year of the University of California admission requirements. The following
California State Standards for Chemistry will be covered in this course:

                                         California State Standards (Chemistry)
CH.1. Atomic & Molecular Structure CH.5. Acids & Bases CH.9. Chemical Equilibrium
CH.2. Chemical Bonds CH.6. Solutions CH.10. Organic Chemistry & Biochemistry
CH.3. Conservation of Matter & Stoichiometry CH.7. Chemical Thermodynamics CH.11. Nuclear Processes
CH.4. Gases & Their Properties CH.8. Reaction Rates CHIE.1. Investigation & Experimentation

  Course Goals
  Students will be able to:
enhance their understanding of scientific theories and methods through safe laboratory investigation.
prepare for success in any college freshman, laboratory-based chemistry course.
develop critical thinking and mathematical skills through problem solving.
master chemistry fundamentals described by California and District Science Standards.
increase scientific literacy and understanding of complex issues faced in a scientific society.

       Grading Components
Quizzes and Tests will be announced in advance. The Midterm and Final Exams are cumulative in nature. Students
will keep a 3 ring binder notebook (1 inch) of all of their coursework. Detailed instructions and rubrics will be
provided for class work, homework, notebook checks, lab reports, and projects.

Homework
Expect one hour of homework every night. Homework assignments for which all assigned problems have been completed
will be stamped at the start of each class period.
Extra Credit (Chem Cash)
Extra credit will be awarded as “Chem Cash”. One “dollar” is equal to one additional point on an assignment, test, or quiz.
No Chem Cash may be used on midterm/final exams, and it cannot be applied toward missing work. There is
a limit of $10 (10 points) for a single assignment, and students are limited to $25 total/quarter.
Course Policies
Please honor the following practices to help ensure a pleasant classroom experience.

Be Safe Be On Time & Strive for Be Help No Electronic

environment and be in your seat when the tardy bell rings.
            Make-Up Work Policies
Work (including quizzes and tests) due or missed because of an unexcused absence will receive a grade of
zero. Assignments due on the day of an excused absence are due upon return to class. Students should
consult the Make-Up Work Box and/or class website to obtain missed work, and schedule/submit it within 3
days of absence. Please discuss any extenuating circumstances with instructor.
Late Work Policy
Up to three late assignments will be graded for half credit each grading quarter. Items missing a completion stamp will
be considered late and graded for half credit. Late assignments turned in later than three days past the due date will
not be accepted. Label each paper “Late Work”.
            Electronic Devices
Electronic equipment such as cell phones, MP3 players, etc. should be turned off and kept out of sight
during class. Failure to do so will result in teacher confiscation. Repeated offenses will be handled in
accordance with SDA’s official Cell Phone/IPOD Policy.
          Academic Integrity
All work submitted should be your own. Any student found to commit or facilitate cheating will be referred
to the Administrative team at San Dieguito Academy and receive a zero for the assignment.
Restroom Passes
Students should limit requests to leave class, and obtain a hall pass in addition to signing out and in of class.

Communication
Parent/Student/Teacher communication is vital to student success and is encouraged at anytime and for
any reason. Thank you for taking the time to read this syllabus, and for discussing it with your family
members. Please feel free to contact me at anytime (contact information provided on first page).

Students
I have read the syllabus and understand the course expectations and policies. I agree to abide by these
expectations, and will commit to doing quality work the entire course. I understand I am responsible for
my own behavior and actions. I also understand that cheating is unacceptable and occurs when:

1) I fail to do my own work and turn in something I did not personally complete.
2) I use anything other than acceptable materials to complete assignments or a quiz/exam.
3) I provide answers or work to another student.
