Wilson James open ground breaking new london consolidation centre
Following the success of the acclaimed Heathrow Consolidation Centre and the DTI supported study of the project, Wilson James have now opened a brand new and much larger Consolidation Centre in London. This is a major breakthrough for our Company maintaining our position ahead of our competitors. The Centre is the first of its kind in the UK as it serves multiple inner city construction projects through materials handling, storage and delivery. The new facility is situated in South East London just 3 miles from the City and 4 miles from the West End. This specialist distribution resource is outside the congestion-charging zone and has easy access to channel ports and main roads to make the transfer of materials as easy and efficient for suppliers as possible. The London Consolidation Centre is almost three times the size of the existing Heathrow facility and has been established with significant support and endorsement from both Transport for London and Constructing Excellence. The Centre will be making use of the very latest in advanced software for measuring and tracking vehicle emissions, driver performance, warehouse management and other deliverables. The environmental benefits of using such a facility include reduction of vehicle numbers in the local area, reduced congestion and pollution, better air quality, real-time vehicle tracking and routing, use of environmentally friendly fuel (where possible). It is hoped that the facility will serve as the model for logistics delivery of major construction projects (including the London 2012 Olympics construction programme) and that the techniques used and lessons learned will be adopted elsewhere in the industry. Stanhope Plc and Bovis Lend Lease are owed a special vote of thanks for their enthusiasm and commitment to embrace the use of the Consolidation Centre for several ‘flagship’ projects that they are delivering. Wilson James is already in discussions with several other major developers who are expected to use the facility in the near future.

The opening of this new facility has also created a number of new positions, most of which have now been filled but as the centre grows other positions will undoubtedly become available so keep your eyes peeled in the weekly opportunities. The Centre also has considerable office space and outside areas that will be able to host additional activities such as the delivery of practical, hands-on training, for example forklift and vehicle banksmen courses, as well as more traditional classroom training. We wish all the new team at the Centre the best of luck and look forward to seeing the success of this project in to the future. Gary Sullivan Managing Director - Logistics Division
Wilson James Snares First Ever Silver Fox
At a recent seminar, Wilson James were presented with an achievement award from The Security Watchdog; the UK’s leading on-site auditing company for the manned guarding industry. Terry O’Neil, Managing Director of the Security Watchdog explained; “In essence, the Silver Fox Audit Team tests the alertness and efficiency of on-site security teams by trying to gain unauthorised access using methods such as deception, distraction, tailgating and producing clearly false personal documentation. These audits take place at any time of the day or night and at weekends and therefore give a real indicator of the effectiveness of the Manned Security service.” Wilson James were awarded the very first annual ‘Silver Fox’ Award in recognition of the outstanding success rate the security teams achieved in preventing the series of unauthorised auditors on to site over the period of a year. This accolade is a wonderful testament to the quality and hard work of Wilson James employees; congratulations and thanks go to all the members of staff involved for their excellent standards, vigilance and dedication.
ILM Programme proves a winner
October proved to be an excellent month for Wilson James when, in addition to the Security Excellence Awards, we also received the SITO National Training Award 2005 for 'Outstanding Training Practice within an Organisation' in recognition of the Wilson James ILM training initiative. The judges commented “We were unanimous in our opinion that the initiative achieved a good balance between organisational needs, customer needs and employee needs. It is good to finally see investment in line managers - something that is very rare in the private security industry. The bestowal of this award once again demonstrates that Wilson James is a class act at the forefront of industry direction, showing innovation that is second to none”.
This employee development programme has been running for the past two years over which time some 120 candidates have completed the Level 2 programme with a further 80 completing the Level 3 programme. We have received many positive reports regarding the impact and benefits of the programme from employees, managers and clients alike. However the overriding benefit of the programme has been that it has assisted many employees realise their potential by moving on to the next stage of their career with Wilson James. This award is an excellent accolade which pays tribute to all the hard work that the Training and Development Team and other managers have put into shaping and implementing these programmes. Thanks and congratulations go to all those that have made this initiative a continued success. Gemma Quirke Human Resources Director
Wilson James Secures New Office
The Security Services Division are delighted to announce their re-location to a new office at Bourne End. Based in Buckinghamshire, the office is conveniently close to the M40 and the M4. The move from Taplow was primarily implemented to facilitate the continued expansion of the Division. However, with its modern environment and improved facilities (including a meeting room equipped with video display equipment) it is anticipated that the new establishment will provide a more welcoming and professional atmosphere for visitors and colleagues alike. 2 On 4th October Wilson James and Tate were awarded ‘Best Partnership Initiative’ at the prestigious Security Excellence Awards. The awards are ‘designed to salute major pioneers in the field’ and the competition for all the categories was fierce with many of the major industry players involved. On choosing the Wilson James/Tate partnership as winners, the judges commented “This project is an example of the move away from traditional client-contractor relationships to joined-up approaches”.
Wilson James and Tate win Excellence Awards
This is an excellent accolade for both companies and great testament to the strength and effectiveness of the partnering approach employed on this contract. Congratulations to all!
More information on the Tate sites can be found in our ‘Introduction to Site’ piece on page 4.
WJ Site wins Prime Minister’s Award
Brighton’s new Jubilee Library was awarded the 2005 Prime Minister’s ‘Better Public Building Award’ at a ceremony held in London on 13th October 2005. The library is ultra modern, innovative and one of the most energy efficient public buildings in the country. The library building is part of a new city square, organised by Brighton and Hove Council, which sees the transformation of a site which has been derelict for half a century. Wilson James have been working on the project since February 2004 providing Traffic Management to the whole project

which comprises five plots and will eventually contain a large international hotel, office blocks and two plots of residential properties. Sean McKeeman, our Logistics Manager, plus two operatives organise all vehicles on and off the site – on a good day approximately 45 lorries
would go through the site, although at the beginning of the project during the ‘muck away’ stage Sean remembers up to 120 muck lorries being processed. Although the library building is now finished, Wilson James will remain on site until December 2005.
Corporation of London awards for Wilson James Clients
We were pleased to hear that two of our main Logistics clients have recently won Considerate Contractor Gold Awards from the Corporation of London. We have assisted Bovis Lend Lease (at Bow Bells House) and Mace (at our Lime Street project) in keeping their construction sites clean and tidy with neat hoardings, providing an efficient traffic flow into and out of the site along with good third party liaison. The Corporation of London are keen to reward companies with a ‘good neighbour’ approach and Wilson James are proud to be part of these prestigious projects.
Arndale completes first phase
On 20th October 2005 the first phase of the new Manchester Arndale North Extension project, (as featured in Issue 13 of ‘Sign of the Times’) opened to the public. Wilson James has been providing a full logistics service at the Manchester Arndale since October 2004 marking our first major project in the North West. The team of around 30 is made up from a Traffic Management team, who look after the gates and service tunnel and a Waste Management & Material Movement team who look after the trade contractor’s good in and goods out, with 2 forklift and hoist operators completing the team. The grand opening, which was 12 months earlier than originally planned by the client, included 150,000 square feet of the anchor store (Next's first major department store) and a variety of smaller retail units and cafes set around a new major public space. This phase represents

around a third of the scheme's total 550,000 square feet and links in to the existing Arndale shopping centre. Thanks go to all the team for their hard work to date on this high profile project and we look forward to continued success in helping to deliver the rest of the extension programme over the next 12 months. Introduction to Tate London Sites
On the 1st April 2005 Wilson James secured the important new tri-site contract with the Tate organisation to provide a range of security services across the London sites consisting of Tate Modern, Tate Britain and Tate Stores. Wilson James have had a relationship with Tate since Tate Modern was converted from its former use as Bankside Power Station. We now also cover Tate Britain, located at Millbank near Victoria, which re-opened on 1st November 2001 in its current form following extensive refurbishment as part of the Tate Gallery Centenary Development Programme. For the previous 100 years the building had been called simply the ‘Tate Gallery’ but, with the opening of the Tate Modern in May 2000, has now reverted to its original intended use as the exhibitor of exclusively British art dating from 1500 to the present day. As part of this new contract Wilson James is now also responsible for the 24-hour security service at Tate Stores; a high security facility where the elements of 65,000 plus items in the Tate collection not being displayed at any of the Tate galleries are stored and maintained in controlled conditions. With both galleries open 362 days a year and attracting in excess of 4 million visitors annually over the two public sites the Tate teams are kept extremely busy. The 43 members of staff at Tate Modern, 31 strong team at Tate Britain and 9 at Tate Stores all operate in line with the Wilson James 4 on 4 off rota system and in addition to their normal daily duties also respond to the needs of short term tasks including the setup of new exhibitions and other projects. Tri-site training has been introduced in order to ensure consistency of service and to improve the site knowledge of the whole Tate team. Examples of this cross-site training include first aid at work and the use of defibrillators. Wilson James also provide a range of value-added services including a tri-site night response mobile unit, providing security, health safety & fire safety induction training for Tate staff and other contractors, as well as providing security for a range of significant special events and logistically supporting major arts installations. As a part of the initiative to provide an improved and integrated service across the Tate estate, members of staff are being fully trained in all areas of the operation with the aim being that they will be able to work on any of the 3 Tate sites at short notice should the need arise. This not only provides Tate with an increasingly flexible and more knowledgeable team but also gives individuals more variety in their daily routine and increased awareness of the issues faced at the other sites. The management team on the Tate London Sites contract is led by Account Manager Allison Fraser, supported by Operations Manager Terry McAndrew with daily site management from Security Co-ordinators Chris Berry, (Tate Modern) Graham Dunkley (Tate Britain) and assistance from Tony Lynch (Tate Modern and Stores). I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the long standing team members for their continued loyalty and high standards of service and to welcome all new staff to Wilson James. Allison Fraser Account Manager

Spotlight on 51 Lime Street
Wilson James are pleased to be part of the construction project of what is set to be an architecturally striking new office and leisure facility in the centre of London. It is an excellent opportunity to join with British Land Plc and Stanhope Plc in their City Development Programme and be involved in adding new shape and design to the city at the start of a new era. Lime Street is based in the heart of the insurance district of London and building works have commenced on the site of the 1958 Lloyds Building. 51 Lime Street will offer a stunning 28 storey development of the most modern office accommodation in London. It will include new public plaza at ground level with accommodation for retail, restaurants and wine bars.

Project Construction Managers Mace have awarded Wilson James the Logistics and Security contract and within that have given us responsibility for the Traffic Management on and around site. To this end we have installed the Zone Manager computer software system and it is working well to assist contractors with booking deliveries to site. This is also a great asset to the team of Traffic Marshals who, under the supervision of Traffic Manager Darren Black, do an outstanding job of organising the often large numbers of vehicles coming to and from site. The team of Welfare Operatives do a great job of keeping the accommodation area on site spotless and welcoming. They look after a 5 level accommodation unit that includes a manned cloakroom facility, shower and changing rooms, a canteen and office space for most of the contractors. We are pleased also to have a Wilson James Occupational Health Nurse join us; he will be offering health advice and support to those working on Site, as well as First Aid when required. At this point in the project the main raft foundation has been cast for the feature tower and structural works have begun; while on the second tower (set to be 11 storeys) the core is well under way with the goods lift shaft now reaching Level 9. We are contracted to be involved up to Shell and Core stage, scheduled as December 2006 and with Colin Barnes as Logistics Manager it should be a well run team that make the hand over next year. A day in the life of: Ian Brown
Duke of Edinburgh Award Trainer
He enjoys the challenge and the sense of achievement and says it’s very rewarding to be part of the scheme - although he has picked up a few nicknames along the way…! The young people are often entertaining and he remembers one incident whilst training a group on using a compass and explaining magnetic bearings he had to convince a young boy that there weren’t actually huge red magnets at the North and South poles. Ian Brown is the Security Manager at our Constellation Europe site in Bristol where Wilson James provides access control, traffic management and site security with a team of 20 staff. Constellation Europe produce and import alcohol, including Blackthorn Cider and Babycham as well as a huge range of Australian wines. The wholesale sites at Shepton Mallet and Park Royal distribute to the hotel and pub trade and provide everything needed for that industry ranging from soft drinks to spirits and fine wines. As the Security Manager, Ian’s remit covers a wide geographical area with Chepstow in South Wales, Avonmouth, Bristol, Shepton Mallet in Somerset and Park Royal near the new Wembley stadium. Fortunately he enjoys the travelling! For more information on the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, please visit www.theaward.org
Ian Brown (second from left) on his Duke of Edinburgh challenge
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme celebrates its 50th anniversary next year and Ian Brown, Security Manager at Constellation Europe in Bristol, has been involved in the scheme for over half that time. He joined the scheme as a Cadet in 1974 and gained his Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards over the next four years, culminating in 1978 when he was presented his Gold Award at Buckingham Palace by The Duke of Edinburgh. Ian remained interested in helping with the scheme and signed up to train army cadets at Ragland Barracks in Newport. He had a break for a few years to raise his family but three years ago he decided to get involved again, and he now trains young male offenders at a prison in Bristol. The boys are 14-18 years old and, along with a small team of Prison Officers and Teachers, they identify suitable candidates to join the scheme and work towards their award. So far they have put around 40 young people through the scheme to date.
There are five main sections of the award: helping the community or the environment, developing a new skill, taking part in an organised activity, doing an expedition and taking part in a residential project. Ian’s current project, within the community/ environment section of the award, is working on a garden at a school for children with special needs located in Bristol, which is quite a test – supervising the children and DofE candidates!
Building for the new A380 Airbus at Terminal 3
Wilson James were recently involved in a very high profile project at Heathrow. In order to accommodate the new doubledecker A380 Airbus, BAA are building a major new pier on Terminal 3 and part of the project involved the remote building of two fixed-link bridges and a vertical circulation core (or stairwell to you and me) weighing approximately 800 tonnes. The first link bridge was installed overnight on 29th/30th June using vehicles which looked like something out of Thunderbirds. Wilson James were responsible for transporting the client, Principal Contractor, structural engineers and a film crew in a minibus, along with a couple of operatives with fire extinguishers and spill kits, to clear up any oil spillage. Another Wilson James team was responsible for setting up road closures and a diversion around the area where the stairwell will eventually be located.

Colm McGrath
Continuing our series of articles on employees who have excelled in their careers at Wilson James, this article charts the progression of Colm McGrath, a key manager in our Construction Logistics Division.
Before Colm joined Wilson James he was a dairy manager in Ireland working around 13 hours a day, seven days a week. “It was a good job” he said “but I needed a fresh start and a new challenge somewhere else and now here I am almost ten years later”. Colm joined WJ as a Logistics Operative on the Garrard House contract in February 1996, one of the company’s very early logistics projects. “I started off on the job as a gate man/welfare operative before moving up the ladder and becoming site supervisor. I think one of the most important things my manager there taught me was that you are only as good as the team of men you have working around you and I have had the pleasure of working with some great ones.” Colm has worked his way up through the ranks via a number of flagship construction projects including Gresham Street, Citypoint where he took his first step into management as Traffic Manager and Chiswick Park where he became Logistics Manager.
Colm was always keen to take up training and development opportunities where they arose and enrolled on courses such as SMART management and the new ILM programme to help develop his skills. “My practical experience and the courses I have done have taught me that it is vital to make sure your team are well looked after and motivated- they are the key to the success of a project and the backbone of the company”. Following spells at Paternoster Square, Juxon House and a year at Gatwick Airport, Colm made the move to his current position as Project Manager at Warrington Golden Square (B150) working with Bovis Lend Lease to build an extension to the existing shopping centre in the heart of Warrington town centre. The youngest of a family of five, Colm was brought up in South Limerick and his hobbies include going to see Manchester United Football Club and following Munster (an Irish rugby team). Colm is also a vital part of the Wilson James Zapcat team and as Beach Manager helps look after visitor safety and the upkeep of the boats during racing events.
If you would like further information about personal development or progression in your career you should speak to your line manager. The Weekly Opportunities Bulletin also provides details of career opportunities that are available.
Above: The British Airways building at Waterside.
Unfortunately the stairwell proved difficult to attach so the Wilson James team had to keep the road closures in place for longer, finally completing at 7.30am. The second link bridge was fitted on 6th July with Wilson James again in attendance setting up road closures and also marshalling the lift exclusion zone. Many thanks to the night team including Alf Burrows (Supervisor), Didier Borra
(Supervisor), Stewart Gray (Minibus driver), Stuart Rolfe (Telehandler forklift operator), Ali Abbas (Logistic Operative), Amit Ahuja (Logistic Operative), Fahid Salim (Logistic Operative) and Clive Bird (Logistic Operative) who all worked so hard on this project and ensured its success. He then had a security role on the Henrietta House project near Oxford Street for a year before moving to the London School of Economics construction project. He was a Leading Hand on this project for two years, finally seeing the project completed which was very rewarding for him. John’s next project was Merrill Lynch in Farringdon doing vehicle management, followed by 18 months as a Fire Marshall at our prestigious Times Square project. hn now works on the T5 Project at Heathrow as a Supervisor – here’s to the next 10 years!
Martin Adu-Kwanin

Gemma Fuller
Gemma initially began working with Wilson James in September 1995 as a temp for a two week period, after deciding not to return to London since starting a family. She was then fortunate enough to be offered a part time position as one of only two HR officers at Wilson James. Gemma took up the challenge of vetting staff as well as issuing contracts and being involved in the recruitment process. Gemma remembers at that time there were around 100 members of staff, whose files occupied only two filing drawers (the HR department now has 14 filing cabinets!). In 1998 the support centre moved offices to Chalkwell Lawns and the HR team has grown significantly since then to cope with the additional staff working at Wilson James – currently around 1,700 employees. Gemma continues to thrive within the HR department concentrating on staff benefits, as well as continuing to head up the vetting and HR administrator functions.
John Atkinson
John joined Wilson James in November 1995 as a Logistics Operative working at Terminal 1, Heathrow Airport. He remembers working on the new automated baggage system and the Gate 5 extension. After being promoted to Supervisor, John moved over to Terminal 4 working on the ‘coaching gate’, where the coaches drop passengers off after they have landed. John then worked on various Terminal 3 projects, including Pier 5 passenger segregation and airport lounges, doing various tasks such as traffic management and road closures. John is now a Logistics Manager at Terminal 5 and has responsibility for the Arrivals Level of the main T5A building.

Wilson James Powerboat Team Finish Season in Style
The Zapcat team of Alan Webster (Construction) Rob Graves (Construction) Paul Stover (Security) Tom Rich (Security) and support crew of David James, Colm McGrath and Stefan Toth arrived in Bournemouth for the last weekends racing of the season only to encounter high winds and massive breaking waves. Saturday’s racing resulted in Wilson James being in pole for the final. A hard fought race ended with a first place for Wilson James; a result which kept the team in fifth place in the 40 boat UK National Championship but reducing the gap significantly on the leaders. Whilst the championship was already won by the Tohastu Outboard Works Team, second and third place were still mathematically possible. Sunday morning arrived and with it a storm to rival the hurricanes of Florida. After finishing first in every heat it was all set up for a dramatic and tense final. As the final start flags went down the Wilson James team were like men possessed flying into first place. Our joy was short-lived as into lap 3 a race boat flipped over and we were set for a restart. Again Wilson James flew into the lead but this time our closest rivals were right on our tail. Two laps into the race we were hit from behind and pushed on to a marker buoy- a tense steward’s enquiry resulted in our rivals being disqualified. A third restart left Wilson James needing to finish third or better. As Alan Webster crashed the boat through the massive waves and rode the surf, (flying his boat as much as driving it!) Wilson James finished a close second to elevate us from fifth to second in the national standings. Overall the season was a great success that saw Wilson James take 6 trophies and display superb teamwork with both security and construction divisions combining to achieve against some powerful teams. A big thank you to all involved and a special thanks to those sponsors and suppliers who supported us throughout the season. Gary Sullivan

Walking on the Moon
At midnight on the 18th June 2005 Hayley King, IT Administrator at Westcliff Support Centre took up the challenge to walk 26.2 miles through London in her bra for the Playtex Moonwalk. Luckily there were 15,000 women and 1,000 men also taking part with the united aim to raise money for breast cancer research and cancer care. Hayley completed the walk in an excellent 8 hours, 17 minutes and raised £736 in total. She said “There was a good atmosphere with lots of people encouraging you throughout the night and had a great sense of achievement when I reached the end in Hyde Park. Although it was the hardest thing I have ever had to do, I am considering taking part again next year and would encourage others to sign up too.” Well done Hayley! If you are interested in finding out more information about this event you can visit: www.walkthewalk.org.
Reading and Number Volunteers at Wilson James
Wilson James has been participating in a volunteering scheme based at Blenheim School in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex. The scheme partners with ‘Business in the Community’ to place volunteers from our Support Centre with children in a local school. The volunteers work with the children for one hour a week to help raise the abilities of those who currently have difficulties with their reading and number skills. One hour per week of additional reading practice for 13 weeks can raise a child’s reading age by 6 months. The first term of this scheme has now finished and all the volunteers have said that helping to develop the childrens’ social and reading skills has given them a real sense of contribution and achievement. From a business perspective we also feel that taking part has provided development opportunities for the volunteers in terms of communication, motivation and leadership skills. Many thanks to those who have volunteered to take part in this scheme. Colette Black HR Manager
Oxfam Trailwalker charity event
On 16 July two Wilson James staff, Chris Cray and Bobby Start joined forces with clients from Linklaters to enter a team for the Oxfam Trailwalker Challenge. This challenge requires teams of four to walk 100km along the South Downs Way in under 30 hours to raise money for both Oxfam and the Ghurkha Welfare Trust and is hailed as being the world’s greatest team challenge. On a weekend that saw some of the hottest weather this year, (causing many people to drop out of the event) the whole team successfully completely the challenge in just under 28 hours, raising £3000 in the process.
