Mr. Ernie Fowler is from Hardin County Schools in Illinois . INSURANCE Student Accident Coverage will be provided for the 2008-2009 school year for each enrolled student. You will receive a brochure that describes this coverage provided at no cost to you through the school district’s insurance. Other optional insurance, including 24-hour coverage will continue to be available. Contact the school secretary for more information. BUS Parents may bring students to school on the first day or students may ride the bus. Because riding on the bus is a privilege, discipline on the bus is very important. We expect students to behave at all times. Students who persist in breaking bus safety and/or conduct rules will be excluded from riding the bus for a period of time. If your child is not to ride the regular bus at dismissal, please call the office before 2:00 P.M. A bus pass must be issued, and this will give the secretary enough time to fill out the pass and deliver it to a student. No student will be allowed to ride another bus without permission from his/her parent/guardian. If your child needs to go to a place other than the regular stop on early dismissal days or half-days, please send a note so a bus pass can be written. If you pick up your child at the end of the day, please remain in the front hall. Parents waiting outside the classroom door can be extremely distracting to students. BREAKFAST AND LUNCH Breakfast and lunch will be served the first full day of school (Wednesday, August 20). Students may eat a hot lunch or bring a sack lunch. FIRST DAY: Tuesday, August 19 8:00-10:00 Wednesday, August 20 8:00-2:55 SCHOOL DAY HOURS Full Day: 8:00-2:55 Half Day: 8:00-10:55 Early Dismissal: 8:00-12:55 PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS No child may attend Kindergarten (or first grade if your child did not attend Kindergarten) until we have received the completed Physical Examination form. If your child attended our Kindergarten, we have the papers on file for first grade. YOUR CHILD WILL BE EXCLUDED FROM SCHOOL if a physical exam form is not in the office on the first day of school. Students may buy milk with a sack lunch by paying $.25 a carton at the lunch line. Milk or juice for milkbreak will be charged to your account. We have a new system for tracking lunches served. Each student has a 4 digit PIN and that number is entered in on a keypad after the student receives the lunch. All students should start the year with a deposit in their accounts. Plan on starting with at least a week’s worth of money in the account. (Remember to include milk-break costs.) We will send notices only when your account gets low ($5.00) or less). Please send the money in an envelope on Monday morning to put money in your account. If you send money to school, please mark on the envelope the amount, the child’s name, and how the money is to be used. BOOK RENTAL Book rental is $55 for students Kgth 4 grade. The amount must be paid on or before the first day of school. Arrangements must be made with the office for later payments. Those unable to pay must fill out an “indigent form.” PARKING Please do not park in the bus loading/unloading zone between 7:20-8:00 a.m. and 2:30-3:00 p.m. Only the front (north) doors should be used by visitors and parents. If you have an outstanding bill from last spring, it will appear on the first statement this fall unless you pay at registration. SCHOOL PICTURES On Monday, September 15 th, students will have individual pictures taken. There will be a “retake day” to catch those who are not in school on that day. OPEN HOUSE PTO will sponsor the Open House on Wednesday, September 4th. You will sign-up for Parent-Teacher Conferences on that evening.      Skating Accelerated Reader Recycling Field Trips Smiles  Attendance information I recommend that you read carefully the pages in handbook about attendance (page 9). After 10 days of absence (for any reason) per semester, your child will have to have a doctor’s excuse. A Gentle Reminder from Mrs. Weldy—  Each year I am bewildered by some parents who repeatedly bring their children to school late. Not only do these students miss important instruction, but they also are learning that it’s “OK to be late.” “All absences after the 10 th during the semester will be unexcused unless the student presents medical verification, and the student will not have make up privileges. All out of school suspensions have no make up privileges.” This will be strictly enforced.  Some of the great changes at Harristown  We have adopted a new science and we purchased this with state textbook loan money. Each year the district has purchased books for a subject area in efforts to have the elementary schools using the same texts. We will be getting a new phone system, and it will have features that include voice mail for teachers and an answering system when school is not in session. Be sure to check our website for more information. Let’s cultivate character in our children that puts a premium on promptness. Being on time shows that you value the education that your child is receiving. Believe me, children learn a lot from what they see is important to you.  Be cautious about getting upset at the teacher, lunch aide, or me based on what your child says. Often the child leaves out some information (sometimes intentionally!), and you may be jumping to conclusions based on just part of the story. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  Everyone should be respectful  Everyone should be responsible  Everyone has a right to learn.  Everyone has a right to be safe.
