SECTION ONE (READING):
(1)The Weather in Bahrain
passage, which describes what is the weather like in Bahrain.
Read this short
_______________________________________________________________________________
                             The Weather in Bahrain
The weather is always very important. People usually divide the weather into seasons.
They are summer, winter, autumn and spring. Ali lives in Bahrain, in this part of the Arabian
Gulf.
Spring and autumn are lovely seasons but very short, everything comes alive and green.
In autumn, the leaves turn yellow but the weather is still pleasant.
Summertime is long, hot and humid. It is very disgusting especially it is during the
school’s holidays. My family and I have fun together; we go on picnics and go swimming at the
sandy beaches of Bahrain.
Winter is quite good season. It rains a little and people sometimes have problem with
their home and many traffic accidents. Last December we had a storm which caused some
damages.
In conclusion, weather in Bahrain is only two seasons’ summer and winter.
Answer these questions:

    1. Where does Ali Live?

2.What is the weather like in Bahrain during summer?
    ________________________________________________________________.
3.What happens to the leaves in autumn?

    4.Is it cold in winter?

    5.When did the storm happen?

(2)Read the following text about an animal and then complete the table below.
Everyone knows the small insect called the mosquito. It is almost certain that
you can find many mosquitoes near swamps, ponds, and lakes. Mosquitoes have an
interesting life cycle. The female mosquito bites a person or animal in order to get some blood.
She needs this blood before she lays her eggs. Second, she flies to an area of water and deposits
her eggs in the water. In a few days the eggs open, and the baby mosquitoes, called larvae, come
out. In a short time, they will mature and fly away.

(3) Read the text about some ecological problems and answer the questions:
1. ____________________________

Oil on beaches, vehicle exhaust fumes, litter and many other waste products are all
called pollutants, because they pollute our environment.
2_____________________________
Pollution can affect out health and harm animals and plants. We pollute our
environment with all kinds of chemical waste from
factories and power stations. These substances are the unwanted results of modem
living. Pollution has spread to the land, air and water of every corner of Earth, even to
the Antarctica and Mount Everest.
3______________________________
As well as everyday pollution, there is also accidental pollution for example, when a
                                                                  -

ship leaks oil and creates a huge oil slick in the ocean. This kind of pollution causes
damage to the environment and kills millions of fish and sea birds.
4_______________________________
Scientists still have much to learn about pollution, but we do know how to control it.
We can also reduce pollution by recycling. Recycling cuts down litter, reduces air and
water pollution and saves energy.

A. Match 4 of these titles with the paragraphs:
 • Pollution caused by ships ( )
  • Pollution in the home ( )

  • Kinds of Pollutants ( )

(5)Our Solar System

Our solar system consists of an average star we call the Sun, the planets Mercury,
Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. It includes: the
satellites of the planets; numerous comets, asteroids, and meteoroids; and the
interplanetary medium. The Sun is the richest source of electromagnetic energy (mostly
in the form of heat and light) in the solar system. The Sun's nearest known stellar
neighbor is a red dwarf star called Proxima Centauri, at a distance of 4.3 light years
away. The whole solar system, together with the local stars visible on a clear night,
orbits the center of our home galaxy, a spiral disk of 200 billion stars we call the Milky
Way. The Milky Way has two small galaxies orbiting it nearby, which are visible from
the southern hemisphere. They are called the Large Magellan Cloud and the Small
Magellanic Cloud. The nearest large galaxy is the Andromeda Galaxy. It is a spiral
galaxy like the Milky Way but is 4 times as massive and is 2 million light years away.
Our galaxy, one of billions of galaxies known, is traveling through intergalactic space.

The planets, most of the satellites of the planets and the asteroids revolve around the
Sun in the same direction, in nearly circular orbits. When looking down from above the
Sun's north pole, the planets orbit in a counter-clockwise direction. The planets orbit the
Sun in or near the same plane, called the ecliptic. Pluto is a special case in that its orbit
is the most highly inclined (18 degrees) and the most highly elliptical of all the planets.
Because of this, for part of its orbit, Pluto is closer to the Sun than is Neptune. The axis
of rotation for most of the planets is nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic. The exceptions
are Uranus and Pluto, which are tipped on their sides.

Now answer these questions:

1.How many planets are in the solar system?
___________________________________________________________.
2.What is our Galaxy called?
___________________________________________________________.
3.The planets in the solar system orbit around______________________.
      (a) the Earth (b)the Sun (c)The Moon (d)Pluto
4.Do the planets orbit in a counter-clockwise direction?
___________________________________________________________.
5. Write a title for the above reading passage.

and then answer the given questions.
The school has excellent sports facilities —basketball courts, tennis courts, a modern
gymnasium and football and basketball fields. Students in the school are aged from 12to
16 years old. Only those pupils over 11 get homework. Everybody in the school takes
Arabic, Math, English and science. Students can eat lunch in the school and one of the
teachers organizes lunchtime sport in the hall. There is no library or music room in the
school. The school is open on Thursdays for sports activities. The school organizes
school buses, and nobody can come to school by bicycle.

All pupils study mathematics, science and a foreign language — some choose
English, some French. Pupils get a lot of homework every day, but not at weekends.
The school is also closed at weekends. Students have an hour and a half for lunch, and
during this time they can study in the library or join a music club — there is a very good
music teacher at the school. The school is in the center of the Manama city, and
unfortunately there is nowhere to play sport — in games lessons, students have to go to
a sports center by bus. The school is near to public transport and pupils can’t come to
school on bicycles or motorbikes.

During this holiday, my father said that we might spend the holiday in England if I get good
grads. We might study at one of the summer centers for learning English in London.
However, if my father has something to do we will stay in Bahrain. I will watch television,
read English stories, visit my relatives and friends and I might take one of the summer courses in
