2007 ANNUAL REPORT
Autism Awareness Among Hispanics
Easter Seals is expanding outreach efforts to raise awareness
about autism among the Hispanic population. The goal is to help
parents better access the information, services and support they
need to get early diagnosis and care for their child with special
needs.
Hispanic children are diagnosed at about half the rate of non-
Hispanic white children—approximately 1 in 300 versus 1 in 150.
Experts believe the difference is due to under-diagnosis among
Hispanics, not that fewer Hispanics have autism.
At its autism web site (www.autism.easterseals.com), Easter Seals
has launched a link to a Spanish-language version of the site.
Meeting the Needs of All Children
The heart of Easter Seals is its staff—people who are passionate
about the difference Easter Seals early intervention services make
for young children and families.
It’s critical for families to find a trusted resource that can connect
them to early services to help their child. Easter Seals is that
trusted resource.
There will always be new challenges and new problems. Here in
Eastern PA, Easter Seals staff members are dedicated to provid-
ing life-changing services and support to people with disabilities
and their families.
Improving Life for All People
People with Down syndrome face some unique challenges in
addition to those we all face in life. In his 1999 paper, Motor skills/
sensory development in with Down syndrome, Naznin Virji-Babul writes:
“It is important that adolescents and adults with Down syndrome
be encouraged to participate in movement education programs
that are specifically designed to facilitate motor skills in voca-
tional tasks as well as in social and recreational environments.”
In answer to this need, Easter Seals’ licensed therapists provide
physical, occupational, speech and vision therapy as well as
education support from certified early childhood and special
education teachers in hundreds of homes throughout the region.
