In recognition of the dedication of Michigan’s 4,100 school board members, January is designated as School Board Recognition Month. This year’s theme ~ School Boards Lead Strong ~reflects the effort of thousands of men and women who help to shape the direction of Michigan’s public education. School board members voluntarily tackle the enormous job of governing school districts while perserving the core of our representative democracy. Fair Haven parents, students and staffwould like to express their appreciation to our dedicated board members. Thank you to: Andrew Goulet, President Leroy Bristol, Vice-President Sharon Stiltner, Secretary Bud Hulewicz, Treasurer Timothy Idzikowski, Trustee Edward Stanulis, Trustee William Jennings, Trustee
A safe and orderly environment is important to learning. Sheriff Dan Lane has supported our behavior program through presenting certificates to students who have exhibited good citizenship each semester. Our awards ceremony was held in December so Sheriff Lane could hand out the awards for the last time as he was retiring at the end of December. We congratulate our students who received a certificate and encourage all our students to display good citizenship. We wish Sheriff Lane a happy retirement and look forward to having Sheriff Donnellon present good citizen awards for 2nd semester to Fair Haven students in June. (Photo Above: Grace Goldenbogen receives her certificate from Sheriff Lane.) For all those who have students at Fair Haven, or who went to Fair Haven for their elementary years, December 19, 2008 was a sad day. It marked the official last day for Ms. Allen as the secertary at Fair Haven. She worked for Algonac Community Schools for 30 years, the last 22 years being spent at Fair Haven. She was always kind and professional when interacting with students, parents and staff. She is a part of the fabric that makes up our school and she will be greatly missed. Ms. Allen, we wish you all the best!! (Photo Right: Ms. Allen receives recognition from Sheriff Lane for her years of service.)
Congratulations to the following students for exhibiting outstanding behavior and helping to make Fair Haven a great place to learn!
Make some reading resolutions for your family this year
The start of a new year is a great time for making resolutions. This year, make some resolutions. Here are some ideas to consider: *Make reading a part of everyday life. Set aside time when everyone in the house reads. (Reading instant messages doesn’t count!) In addition to helping your child improve his reading, it will give you some much-needed quiet reading time! *Keep reading aloud to your child. Bedtime is a natural time for read-alouds, but families find other ways to fit it into their schedule. You can read aloud while your child eats breakfast. Or have one person read while everyone else cleans up after dinner. *Give reading presents. Instead of one of those plastic toys that will probably break in 20 minutes, give a gift that will last forever. Buy your child books or bookstore gift cards. *Keep lots of reading material handy. The child who won’t read a novel might pick up a magazine about a favorite hobby. Now that you have your resolutions, here are some tips on making sure you can keep them. First, make a plan. Without a plan, you may want a daily reading time, but you may not find a way to fit it in. Next, track your progress. Mark the calendar for every day you read aloud. Then reward yourselves. Rent a video based on a favorite book. Or plan a trip to a bookstore café.

Winter is here and we want to make sure that students come to school dressed for the out of doors, including the bus ride. The bus ride to and from school could be chilly as the busses are parked outside and take some time warming up to a comfortable level. Our students go outside for recess everyday unless the temperature is below fifteen degrees. Students need to wear hats, gloves, snow pants and boots to keep warm and dry at recess. We certainly do not want them missing class time coming to the office to call home for dry clothes. So, as your child leaves for school each day, make sure they are dressed warmly.
