IT Perspective - Users get frustrated when they reach their email storage quota, typically set at 1GB or

2.5.1 Traditional Hosted Mail Solutions
Hosted mail Solution is mainly used and deployed by SMB Customers. The Solution provides a basic
Email Messaging Functionality to the users with many limitations. Lets try to understand how this
solution is typically deployed.




Above is the typical deployment of the Hosted Mailing Solution which Involves the following,

           1.   Domain Name – MX Records
           2.   Hosted Mails with Local ISP or Hosted Mail Provider
           3.   Internet Connection - ADSL
           4.   Local Server to download Mails Locally
           5.   POP3 Downloader Software
           6.   Basic User Access on the Local Network

   1. Domain Name – MX Records : The MX – Records are pointing to the Hosted Mail Provider which
      is Local ISP or the Hosted Mail Provider. With this configuration the mails are delivered to the
      Local ISP Or the Hosted Mail Provider Mail Servers.
   2. Hosted Mail with Local ISP or Provider : The Hosted mail will be any standard Mail Server with a
      very low capacity of the mailbox per user. IT Provides a complete POP3 Download Functionality.
      Usually the size of the mailbox ranges from 25 MB to 150 MB per mailbox.
   3. Internet Connection – ADSL : The Internet Connection required get these mails form the Local
      ISP of the Hosted Mail Provider is a minimum of ADSL. Some Companies also use Internet
      Leased Line to get better outgoing mails speed as the upload speed in the ADSL is low.
   4. Local Server : In this setup a Local On Premise Server is required to download the mails from the
      Hosted Mail Provider to the local Server and then to distribute to the users. This Server is a
      Normal Server and the Sizing depending on the No of users and the Mail Box Capacity provided
      to each users, usually it ranges from 500 MB to 1 GB per Mailbox.
   5. POP2 Downloader : A POP3 Downloader is required to regularly download the mails from the
      Hosted Mail Servers to the Local Mail Server. The download check happens every 3 to 5 mins
      and depending on the size of the mails it takes the time to download.
   6. User Access : The User Access in this setup is limited to a local LAN user and in case the Local
      Mail server is not available the mails can be access via the Web at the Hosted Mail Server.
