STUDENT LOAD
Students must register for eight academic subjects. All subjects will receive semester credit (1/2 each semester unless
otherwise noted).
One subject (per semester) may be taken pass/fail if arranged by the stated deadline with a counselor and teacher signature
(cannot be a required class). Passing the class does not count in computing grade point averages but does earn credit.
However, if a pass/fail course is failed, the "F" counts in the grade point average.
Service Learning, Mentor Program and Co-Op Work Experience are only offered on a pass/fail basis and will not count as
the one allowable pass/fail course (if one of these classes is failed, the “F” will count in the GPA).
Students may elect to audit classes if they have already earned high school credit in that subject. In addition, a student
wishing to receive college credit only or high school credit only for a dual credit class may do so. This decision must be
made by the stated deadline. No book fee will be assessed if a college class is taken for high school credit only.
SUBJECTS FAILED
Subjects failed must be repeated if they are required courses.
REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION
Each student must obtain 28 credits to graduate. Transfer student requirements will be individually evaluated.
REQUIRED SUBJECTS
Four (4) credits of English; four (4) credits of physical education (unless exempt), two (2) credits of science; three (3)
credits of mathematics; two (2) credits of social studies (including Civics and American History); one-half (1/2) credit of
health; one-half (1/2) credit of driver education classroom; one-half (1/2) credit of consumer education (unless the
proficiency exam is passed); one-half (1/2) credit of computer technology; one (1) credit in either fine arts (band, chorus,
art), vocational (ag, industrial, home ec, business) or foreign language.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR COLLEGE PREP STUDENTS
English - C.P. III, Composition I, Composition II, Public Speaking and Intro to Literature
Foreign Language - two years of one foreign language (some colleges are requiring three years)
Mathematics - three years starting with Algebra I
Science - three years other than general science including biology and chemistry
Social Science - three years
Computer and Software Applications
DUAL CREDIT CLASSES
Students may elect to earn high school and college credit at the same time by registering for a college course through Lake
Land College. These courses will be taught during the day or as a night class. It should be noted that not all colleges
accept dual credit classes - consult the admissions office at the college or university you plan to attend for specifics. All
dual credit classes are weighted IF they are transfer level courses (100 or above). A book fee of $8.00 per semester hour
will be assessed for dual credit classes. Math and English classes require passing an assessment test for college credit (the
test will be given in the spring at our high school). Students who do not pass into the classes may still take the classes for
high school credit only and will not have to pay the book fee.
Students taking internet classes need to realize that these classes follow the college schedule and may start before Pana
High School is in session. Internet classes charge full tuition and the student will be responsible for one-half of the bill
(full tuition if the class is dropped after the deadline). Also, there will be limited opportunities to drop these classes once
enrolled. Juniors may take these courses if approved by a counselor. Attendance and grades are factors taken into
consideration.
** LLC requires an overall GPA of “C” to enroll in dual credit classes, or a 2.00 GPA for previous work at Lake Land.

In this weighted system, a student receives a bonus of .01 added directly to the completed grade
point average (per semester weighted course PASSED). No weight is given if the class is taken
Pass/Fail or is failed. The weight system is being used to help students in the following ways:
1. College entrance acceptance and scholarship competition
2. Higher grade point averages and class rank
3. National Honor Society averages
